At Holocaust ceremony, Wayland man recounts fleeing Nazis

US Army 4/25/17: NSSC observes Holocaust Days of Remembrance. Though he lost family members and was displaced from his home in his childhood, C. Peter R. Gossels refused to let evil control the rest of his life. Five in his family, including his mother, died in the Holocaust during World War II, and he and his brother, Werner, escaped to France when they were 8 and 5 years old, respectively, but those personal tragedies never consumed Gossels, now 86.

Imagine they were abruptly arrested, taken to South Station, put on cattle cars and sent away to be murdered. “Your mother,” he said. “Think about that…” At a Holocaust Remembrance event Monday at Natick Labs, Gossels shared his story of fleeing his native Germany in 1939 and eventually coming to the United States. His mother, Charlotte Lewy Gossels, was among the millions of Jews and others murdered in the Holocaust.
