CELEBRATING GOLDEN RETRIEVERS AND THE FORTHCOMING 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE BREED.  Tuesday, January 10, 7:30 p.m.  One of the nation’s most popular dogs, the golden retriever originated in a small village in the Scottish highlands on the Guisachan Estate of Lord Tweedmouth, a member of the British Parliament. Joy Viola will discuss this early history, the forthcoming anniversary celebrations, the development of golden retriever rescue organizations, and the canine cancer research funded by the Golden Retriever Foundation.

INTRODUCTION TO THE IPHONE/IPAD.  Tuesday, January 17, 2 p.m.-This is a change in date as it was originally posted as January 10. You have some experience with your iPhone/iPad, but feel like you might be missing out on some of the basics.  Come on in.  M.J. will discuss organizing icons, SIRI and the microphone, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices.  Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you.

GETTING INTO GENEALOGY: AN INTRODUCTION. Thursday, January 12, 1:30-3:30 p.m.  Sufficient information on how to get started in genealogy and family history will be presented by Seema-Jayne Kenney of the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists.

OVERDRIVE AND HOOPLA AND LYNDA, OH MY!  Friday, January 25, 2 p.m.- This is a change in date and time as it was originally posted as January 13 at 10:30a.m. Downloading ebooks from the library using OverDrive has gotten easier than ever. Wayland residents can also now stream DVDs with Hoopla (no waitlist!) and take free classes through Lynda using the library’s online resources.  Find out how to download a book and access these other resources from the library!

JANUARY’S DATABASE OF THE MONTH: REFERENCE USA. This is one of the best general-use business databases out there.  Want to know the annual earnings of all cloud storage companies in the Boston area with more than 30 employees?  You can find them with ReferenceUSA—along with address and phone listings for 271 million people and 44 million businesses in the USA and Canada.  You’ll also find job listings and healthcare provider information.  ReferenceUSA is brought to you by the Town of Wayland, the Minuteman Library Network and the Wayland Free Public Library.

• Clean Eating Cookbook Club: Thursday, January 12, 6 p.m.  One Good Dish:  The Pleasures of a Simple Meal by David Tanis.  Participants come with a dish to share from the cookbook.  We discuss the book while enjoying its bounty.
• Noon Book Group: Friday, January 13.  The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUP. Do you know someone who is learning basic English? The library’s English conversation group meets two Fridays each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The next sessions will be on January 6 and 20.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our needlework group will meet the following dates:  February 1, March 1, April 5, and May 3. All are welcome

EXHIBITS. Photographs by Mary North Allen are on display in the foyer through January.  Allen, a Wisconsin photographer and teacher, photographed, exhibited, and taught during the 1960s-80.  Her memoir, Falling Light and Waters Turning, has been edited by her daughter, Wayland resident Katy Allen. • Storytime with Dog. Thursday, January 19, 10:30 a.m. Children will listen to dog stories and have a chance to visit with Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed.  Corbyn (wither her owner Helen) has been certified as a therapy dog by Pets and People.
• Toddler Stem. Fridays, January 20, 27, February 3, 10, 10:30-11:00 a.m. This four-part STEM series introduces toddlers to Science, Technology, Engineering and Math! For ages 15-30 months with parent/caregiver.  Please register from the Wayland Library’s online calendar. Limited to 9 families.  Workshops will be led by Beverly Mobilia of the Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families.

SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS

• Book Buddies. Tuesday, January 11, 2:30-3:30 p.m. This parent/child book group is for children in grades K to 2 with a parent/caregiver. January’s book is Under the Snow by Melissa Stewart. We will read the book, enjoy a snack, and make a craft.  This program is co-run with the WCPA.
• Parent/Child Book Club. Wednesday, January 11, 7 p.m. This book discussion group is for 3^rd and 4^th graders with a parent.  January’s book is Masterpiece by Elise Broach.
• Maker Lab:  Color Exploration. Wednesday, January 18, 3:00-4:00pm  Put on a lab coat and enter the Maker Lab! Join Giselle from The Learning Hub for this fourth session of our series of STEM Maker Classes.  In this session children will explore the science of color.  This program is rescheduled from December 21. For children ages 5 and up.
• Crafternoon:  Make Your Own Toys. Wednesday, January 25, 3:00-4:00 p.m. Children will design and make their own toys…from building blocks and spinning tops, to tinkertoy towers.  For ages 5 and up.

FOR TEENS

• Learn to Keep Your Cool. Wednesday, January 18, 7-8 p.m. Rachel Rice, founder of Five Rhythms Consulting, will lead a stress reduction workshop for middle school and high school students, just in time for midyear exams.
• Late Night Pizza Study Nights for Teens during Exam Week, January 23, 24, and 25.  Wayland High School Students!  Feed your brain while studying with your friends at the library!  Pizza will be served at 5:30 p.m.  Snacks will be served throughout the evening. The library will stay open until 11 p.m. just for you.  We hope you ace your exams.
