News and Events from the Wayland Library, October 28, 2016

HOLIDAY HOURS.    The library will be closed on Friday, November 11, for Veterans Day. The library will close at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, November 23, for the Thanksgiving holiday and will be closed on both Thursday and Friday as well. We will re-open on Saturday, November 27 at 10 a.m.

COMMUNITY MEETING ON PLANS FOR A NEW LIBRARY.  Come hear Tappé Architects talk about what a new library down near the Middle School might be like and see some conceptual plans for such a facility. Wednesday, November 2, 7 p.m. at the Senior Center in the Wayland Town Building.

dana-mastroianniWELCOME TO OUR NEW DIRECTOR, DANA MASTROIANNI.  Ms. Mastroianni comes to the library with vast and varied experience. She was most recently the assistant director of the Needham Public Library, where (among many other things) she oversaw daily operations, spearheaded a number of far-reaching programs, and wrote the library’s long-range plan. Before that, she was the director of the libraries in Topsfield and Dracut. She began her library career cataloging maps for Cartographic Services at Harvard. We’ve all been wowed by her congeniality, energy, and enthusiasm, and we’re sure you will be, too. She’s the right person for the next chapter in our history.

INDIAN DANCE WITH PALLAVI NAGESHA.  Come to the library on Tuesday, November 1, at 7:30 p.m. to attend our next Great Presenters program when Wayland resident Pallavi Nagesha will talk about and demonstrate Indian classical dance with some of her dance students..

THE LEVELLER WITH JACQUELINE DEMBAR GREENE.   Wayland author Jackie Greene will talk about her middle grade historical novel, The Leveller, at the library on Thursday, November 3, from 7-8:30 p.m. Ms. Greene is the author of 38 books for young readers including the American Girl “Rebecca” series. Autographed books will be available following the presentation.

BABY AND PRE-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

  • Weekly Storytimes!
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) most Tuesday mornings, 10:30-11 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Toddler STEM: Science.  November 2 (Engineering) and November 9 (Math) 10:30-11 a.m. for ages 15-30 months
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack.  Thursday, November 3, 2016, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers.  Join Jeannie Mack for participatory fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs.
  • Storytime with Dog!    Thursday, November 17, 10:30-11a.m. for ages 3 and up.  Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor as Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, and her owner Helen will join us.
  • Zumba Kids Jr.  Tuesday, November 29, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old

SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS

  • Lego Club.  Wednesday November 2, 3-4 p.m. for ages 5 and up.  Children will make fabulous creations out of Legos.
  • Author Visit.  Thursday, November 3, 7-8:30 p.m., for middle-grade students.  Jackie Greene, author of The Leveller will join us to talk about her books.
  • Drop-in Fall and Holiday Crafts.  Friday, November 4, 3-5 p.m. for ages 4 and up.  Get crafty! Children will make spectacular fall and holiday crafts with librarian Elise Katz.
  • Cook and Book Club for Kids.  Monday, November 14, 4-5 p.m. for children ages 8 and up.  Children will make biscuits like Ma in the Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Little House” books. Led by Rebecca Lloyd of the Friends of the Library.
  • Maker Lab: Mayflower Boat Challenge.  Wednesday, November 16, 3-4 p.m. for children ages 5 and up.  Children will learn about buoyancy by making aluminum foil boats. The challenge? Make a boat that holds the most pennies!
  • Parent/Child Book Group.  Wednesday, November 30, 7-8 p.m. for 3rd and 4th graders with a parent.  November’s book is The Lemonade War by Jacqueline Davies.

TEEN PROGRAM.  Art Workshop: Paint with Coffee.  Wednesday, November 9, 3-4 p.m. for grades 6 and up.  Artist Sudakshina Ghosh will lead a workshop for teens on painting with coffee. Registration through our online calendar is required.

3D DESIGN WITH BLENDER. 3D artist Eric Carlsen returns to the library on Thursday, November 17, from 7-8:30 p.m. to introduce teens and adults to the process of creating 3D models using Blender, a powerful and sophisticated 3D design tool. We will be printing out the creations! Workshop attendance needs to be limited, so registration is required. You MUST be 12 or older to register on your own, but we encourage parents to register and work with their children.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION GROUP.  Do you know someone who is learning basic English? The library’s English conversation group meets two Fridays each month from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The next sessions will be on November 4, November 18, December 2, and December 16.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP.  Our needlework group will meet the following dates: December 7, January 4, February 1, March 1, April 5, and May 3. All are welcome

Friends-logoBOOK AND BAKE SALE–GREAT COMMUNITY EVENT!  The Friends of the Library will sponsor their Fall Book and Bake Sale in the Large Hearing Room in the Wayland Town Building on Saturday, November 5, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, November 6, from noon-4 p.m. There will also be a preview for members of the Friends on Friday, November 4, from 5-8 p.m. Memberships will be available at the sale starting at 4:30 p.m. Sale items include delicious baked goods and thousands of quality books in good condition for children and adults. All proceeds go to support Library programs and services. Donations of books will be accepted during set-up in the Large Hearing Room on Wednesday, November 2, and Thursday, November 3. Internet book scanning devices are not permitted in the sale area. Bakers Needed! The Friends of the Wayland Library are looking for bakers to contribute confections to the fall book sale. Baked goods attract sweet lovers of all ages to the sale and add substantially to the bottom line. The sale will be held on November 4-6, 2016. EXHIBITS.  In November the library foyer contains oil painting by artist Rob Franco. The Raytheon Room features photographs the Sudbury Valley Nature Photography group.

nonowrimoNaNoWriMo.  NaNoWriMo (which stands for National Novel Writing Month) challenges participants to write 50,000 words over the course of the month and encourages them by offering Write-In events that provide support and inspiration. The library is participating in NaNoWriMo with a kick-off event with author Jeremy Flagg on Saturday, November 5, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Mr. Flagg, a five-time published author of young adult and science fiction will discuss ways to be a more prolific writer. Following his program you can stay at the library from 12-5 p.m. and dive right into work. We are holding two more Write-Ins on Tuesdays, November 8 and November 22 from 6-9 p.m. For more information contact Rachel Sideman-Kurtz at rsideman@minlib.net.

just-eat-it-a-food-waste-story.36478JUST EAT IT! DOCUMENTARY.  We all love food. As a society, we devour countless cooking shows, culinary magazines, and foodie blogs. So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? “Just Eat It” looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates, perfect produce, and portion sizes, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Co-sponsored with Transition Wayland. Monday, November 7, 7-9 p.m.

PLANNING FOR NEXT “WAYLAND READS” PROGRAM.  Everyone is invited to join us in the library’s Raytheon Room on Tuesday, November 8, 2:30-3:30 p.m. for the first planning meeting for Wayland Reads 2017. ADULT COLORING.  Come experience the latest trend in relaxation–adult coloring! Enjoy a peaceful hour coloring in the company of others. Coloring pages, pencils, and markers available. We’ll meet in the newly created meeting space on the mezzanine. Wednesday, November 16, 2-3 p.m. 

INTRODUCTION TO THE IPHONE/IPAD.  Thursday, November 10, 2-3 p.m.  Do you have some experience with your iPhone/iPad but feel like you might be missing out on some of the basics? Come on in. M.J. will discuss organizing icons, SIRI and the microphone, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you.

WAYLAND CENTER HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE.  The annual Holiday Open House is scheduled for the afternoon of Sunday, December 4. Wayland musician Fran Friedman will be at the library to lead a family sing-along of favorite winter holiday songs from 3 to 4 p.m.
