Boston.com 7/26/16: Meet the Wayland native who wrote Michelle Obama’s sterling DNC speech. If you, like most political analysts, enjoyed Michelle Obama’s moving, personal speech at the Democratic National Convention, you can thank the education system of Massachusetts. Sarah Hurwitz (WHS ’95), the First Lady’s longtime speechwriter, is a product of the Wayland academic system, as well as Harvard College and Harvard Law School. After working as a speechwriter for Hillary Clinton, she joined the Obama campaign in 2008. She has exclusively written speeches for Michelle Obama for the last seven years.

Washington Post 6/13/16 : What’s on Michelle Obama’s mind? Meet the speechwriter who puts it into words. When Sarah Hurwitz sits down at her laptop, she puts on her noise-blocking headphones and imagines Michelle Obama’s exacting voice in her head. The voice might say: No, that transition is clumsy. Or: Are we really telling this story in a way that honours these people? Hurwitz, the first lady’s head speechwriter, has written for the Obamas for eight years and for Michelle Obama exclusively for nearly seven. The two have worked so closely together that nearly every word the first lady has spoken in public has been written or edited by Hurwitz.

  1. It was an amazing speech because it didn’t seem like a speech at all. Sarah captures the first lady’s thoughts and cadences, and it seems as if Michelle Obama is just having a conversation with you. It was intelligent, strong and powerful – great work from a Wayland grad!
