News and Events from the Wayland Library, July 15, 2016

COMMUNITY UPDATE ON LIBRARY FEASIBILITY STUDY.  Wayland residents are invited to attend a forum to update the community on progress made on the Library Planning and Design Study funded at Town Meeting last year. Two sites have been selected for further study: 5 Concord Road (the site of the current library) and 207-195 Main Street (the former Highway Garage site). The architects, the Library Trustees, and the Library Planning Committee will be on hand to discuss preliminary concept drawings and initial cost estimates from the Study. Please attend the forum at on Tuesday, July 26, at 7 p.m. in the Town Building Large Hearing Room and give us your thoughts.

my new rootsCLEAN EATING BOOK CLUB.  Explore clean eating approaches potluck style! Participants make a recipe from a selected cookbook to share. While enjoying our homemade delights, we’ll discuss the book, its author, and what each has to offer. Our next meeting is on Thursday, August 11, 6-7:30 p.m. and we will be cooking from “My New Roots: Inspired Plant-Based Recipes for Every Season” by Sarah Britton.

ARMCHAIR TRAVEL BOOK CLUB  This group usually meets the second Wednesday of each month, but in August we will meet on Tuesday, August 2, from 2-3:30 p.m. We will be reading “A Jewish Mother in Shangri-la” by Wayland resident Rosie Rosenzeig.

 BOOK GROUP IN A BAG  Speaking of book clubs, is your book group tired of having to track down multiple copies of a book for your next meeting? With Book Group in a Bag, you get 12 copies of one title, plus discussion resources and tips for a successful book group. You can keep it for six weeks and reserve it a year in advance. Overlap your reservations, so you can distribute the next book and collect the last book at the same meeting. For more information, contact Assistant Director Sandy Raymond at 508-358-2311.

ANOTHER CHANCE TO HEAR JULIETTE FAY  Join us for our first Wayland Summer Read! Wherever you head this summer, consider taking along Juliette Fay’s new book, “The Tumbling Turner Sisters,” the story of a family in vaudeville. Juliette is a resident of Wayland and author of several popular books, and this is her first foray into historical fiction. Juliette will reprise her spring presentation of “The Tumbling Turner Sisters” at the Council on Aging, on Tuesday, August 16, at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to learn the fascinating history she uncovered in her research while writing the book.

  • OverDrive and Hoopla and Lynda, Oh My!  Learn how to download eBooks, audio, and more from the library. Monday, July 19, 2 p.m.
  • Intro to the iPhone and iPad.  Thursday, August 4, 2 p.m. Don’t forget to bring your iPhone or iPad with you.

JULY ART EXHIBITS  Shennen Bersani is a children’s book author and illustrator. Working primarily with colored pencils, she is illustrating her 26th picture book. Her award-winning books have sold over two million copies worldwide. Donna Berger is an award-winning artist and illustrator. An artist-in-residence at the Chelmsford Center for the Arts, she will be displaying her acrylic paintings of hummingbirds. On July 30, from 10 a.m.-12 p,m. Bersani and Berger will host a Artist Reception for the public in the library’s Raytheon Room.

LIBRARY? HOTSPOT!  You knew that already…after all, everybody comes to the library! But you might not know about our Wi-Fi Hotspot that you can check out for a week at a time. This easy-to-use mobile device offers internet access over a wireless local area network (WLAN), allowing you to connect up to 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices and get high-speed Internet virtually anywhere. Good to have on a long car ride, a vacation, or when your own connection is down.

on your mark get set readYOUTH SUMMER READING PROGRAM.  On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!, the library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program for children from PreK to Grade 6 started on June 20. Check out the grade-level book lists on our website compiled by Wayland Library staff. We have a lot of great kids’ programs coming up, including a puppet show with PuppeTree, “Caps for Sale” (7/18), Creative Movement (7/20), a Library Olympics (7/21), a Hula Hoops with Boston Hoops (7/26), theater workshops in late July (check our calendar for registration info.), Cooking for Kids (8/1), Science Workshop on balance and motion and Newton’s laws (8/8), and Make your own Olympic Medal (8/11). Visit our online calendar for details. All Summer Reading Program participants are invited to an Ice Cream Social on Thursday, August 18.

SUMMER FITNESS FUN FOR KIDS.  On Wednesday, July 20, from 3-3:45 p.m., kids ages 4 and up can come to the library to dance, move, and have fun with Patty Howard of Active Soles, who will lead them in a Creative Movement Class in the Raytheon Room.

PAJAMA STORYTIME AND STUFFED ANIMAL SLEEPOVER.  On Monday, August 15, from 6:30-7 p.m., kids can come for a storytime in their pajamas and then leave their special stuffed animal friends overnight at the library for a sleepover. Kids are invited back to the library the next morning at 10:30 p.m. to see a slideshow of the fun their special animal friends had overnight at the library.

    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Zumba Kids Jr  Tuesday, August 30, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old

STORYTIME WITH A DOG   Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor! Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, and her owner Helen will join us for Storytime on Thursday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. Ages 3 and up.
