on your mark get set readSUMMER READING PROGRAM On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!, the library’s 2016 Summer Reading Program for children from PreK to Grade 6 started on June 20. Kids can register for the program in person in the children’s room or via our website. They can keep track of their reading online or on paper logs (available in the Children’s Room). Check out the grade-level book lists on our website compiled by Wayland Library staff. We have a lot of great kids’ programs coming up: , too, including a visit from Firefighter Todd (7/12), a puppet shows (7/18), Creative Movement (7/20), a Library Olympics (7/21), a Hula Hoops with Boston Hoops (7/26), theater workshops in late July, Cooking for Kids (8/1), Science Workshop on balance and motion and Newton’s laws (8/8), and “Make your own Olympic Medal” (8/11). Visit our online calendar for details. All Summer Reading Program participants are invited to an Ice Cream Social on Thursday, August 18.

LIBRARY? HOTSPOT!  You knew that already…after all, everybody comes to the library! But you might not know about our Wi-Fi Hotspot that you can check out for a week at a time. This easy-to-use mobile device offers internet access over a wireless local area network (WLAN), allowing you to connect up to 10 Wi-Fi enabled devices and get high-speed Internet virtually anywhere. Good to have on a long car ride, a vacation, or when your own connection is down.

LIBRARY PAGES NEEDED.  The library is accepting applications for a position as a high school page starting this fall. Responsibilities include shelving materials, emptying the book drop, and other related tasks. Starting in September, pages work one Saturday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and one Sunday 2-5 p.m. every 4 weeks. We have some optional hours to fill on summer Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

  • Storytimes!  
    • Mother Goose Time (Infants-2.5 years) most Tuesday mornings, 10:30-11 a.m.
    • StoryVine (2.5 -5 years) most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Zumba Kids Jr.  Tuesday, June 28, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old
  • Spanish Storytime. Wednesday, June 29, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old.              Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.

STORYTIME WITH A DOG. Children will listen to dog stories and have a special canine visitor! Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed, and her owner Helen will join us for Storytime on Thursday, July 28, at 10:30 a.m. Ages 3 and up.

ManuFact_poster.inddFILM SCREENING: MANUFACTURED LANDSCAPES.  Manufactured Landscapes” is a feature-length documentary on the world and work of renowned artist Edward, who makes large-scale photographs of ‘manufactured landscapes’ – quarries, recycling yards, factories, mines, dams. He photographs civilization’s materials and debris, but in a way people describe as “stunning” or “beautiful” and so raises all kinds of questions about ethics and aesthetics without trying to easily answer them. The Armchair Travel Book Club presents this film after have read the book “Visit Sunny Chernobyl” by Andrew Blackwell in March in which the author referenced Burtynsky and this film. All are welcome. Wednesday, July 13, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.

 

smitten kitchenCLEAN EATING BOOK CLUB. Explore clean eating approaches potluck style! Participants make a recipe from a selected cookbook to share. While enjoying our homemade delights, we’ll discuss the book, its author, and what each has to offer. tumbling turner sistersWAYLAND SUMMER READ. Join us for our first Wayland Summer Read! Wherever you head this summer, consider taking along Juliette Fay’s new book, “The Tumbling Turner Sisters,” the story of a family in vaudeville. Juliette is a resident of Wayland and author of several popular books, and this is her first foray into historical fiction. Juliette will reprise her spring presentation of “The Tumbling Turner Sisters” at the Council on Aging, on Tuesday, August 16, at 1:30 p.m. All are welcome to learn the fascinating history she uncovered in her research while writing the book.

JULY ART EXHIBITS. Shennen Bersani is a children’s book author and illustrator. Working primarily with colored pencils, she is illustrating her 26th picture book. Her award-winning books have sold over two million copies worldwide. Donna Berger is an award-winning artist and illustrator. An artist-in-residence at the Chelmsford Center for the Arts, she will be displaying her acrylic paintings of hummingbirds.
