Wayland High School Assistant Principal to move to new position as Wellness Director

The following was distributed by High School Principal Allyson Mizoguchi to the School Community:
I am writing to inform you of an exciting change that will advance our impressive K-12 Wellness programs.
As many of you know and appreciate, the Wayland Public Schools has made the enhancement of health and wellness education a district priority for many years.  This longtime focus most recently led to the approval of a K-12 Wellness Director for the FY17 School Year.
Although our interview committee met with several interesting candidates this spring, the search did not yield a candidate with the ideal combination of skills and experience we envisioned for this role.  An opportunity arose when one of our respected high school wellness teachers recently resigned.  We were then able to create a full-time position by combining the 0.4 Director position with a part-time teaching position.  The new position, which fuses teaching and leadership, is well-suited for this critical time in the evolution of our wellness programming.  This attracted the attention of WHS Assistant Principal Scott Parseghian, an experienced leader whose background in wellness has always remained a primary passion.

We are very pleased that Mr. Parseghian has accepted the position of K-12 Wellness Director and high school wellness teacher beginning in the 2016-17 school year.  Of course, with this change comes a loss, as we have deeply valued the devotion, skills, and enthusiasm that he brought to his capacity as Assistant Principal for over a decade.  That Mr. Parseghian’s skills can and will translate effectively to this new challenge speaks volumes about his versatility and benefit to the district as a whole.

Mr. Parseghian is uniquely qualified for this position.  He is a skilled wellness instructor, having taught at the elementary and middle schools in Wayland for many years before becoming a high school administrator.  As part of his administrative responsibilities at WHS, he has led our talented Wellness team for the past six years.  He has been instrumental in implementing our Mentors in Violence Prevention, RAD Self-Defense and ALICE Programs, as well as bringing the groundbreaking “Escalation Workshop” to all of our seniors in May.

Those of you who are acquainted with Mr. Parseghian know that his greatest strength is working positively with youth to help them make smart, safe decisions in school and in life.  His passion for health and physical education, as well as his emphasis on responsible decision-making, have shaped his work as Assistant Principal and driven many of our key curricular and staffing decisions pertaining to wellness.  This new position will afford Mr. Parseghian the time necessary to focus fully on leading this department in innovative directions.

Looking back on all that’s been accomplished in recent years related to health, wellness, and social-emotional learning, we see great progress. Still, we want to do more.  This leadership position, held capably by Mr. Parseghian, will enable the district to further enrich the wellness experience for all students in Wayland.
