MEET THE LIBRARY ARCHITECT!  The Board of Library Trustees and the Library Planning Committee invite you to help design the next Wayland Free Public Library. This is your chance to tell our architect what you want to see in a new or expanded library building. Come meet our design team from Tappé Architects on Tuesday, May 17, at 7 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room.

WHAT’S IT LIKE TO SING IN THE CHORUS OF THE BSO AND BOSTON POPS?
Come to the library on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. for our next Great Presenters program with Jon Saxton to hear an account of what it’s like to audition for, prepare, and perform with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, one of the world’s premier symphonic choruses, and the official chorus of the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops.

wicked pissed“WICKED PISSED” WITH TED REINSTEIN. New England is as dotted with colorful and fascinating feuds as it is with low stone walls and big, red barns. And many of them go back just as far! For instance, did you know that the Breeds and the Bunkers are still fighting over a hill? Or that the revolution is still being fought—by Lexington and Concord?! From the colonial era through early aviation to Red Sox-Yankees and present-day food fights, on Monday, May 16, at 7:30 p.m. WCVB’s Chronicle Journalist Ted Reinstein will tell us who’s really “Wicked Pissed” in New England, and why. (Followed by Q&A, and book-selling/signing.)

The Energetics of Health and Healing. Leslie Barnett, Health Educator, will discuss the variety of ways that individuals can open blocked energy fields using Pulsed Electromagnetic Field therapy, nutrition, and other strategies on Thursday, May 5, from 7-8 p.m. Ms. Barnett is a Health Educator and Coach with a Master’s in Education from Harvard University and certification in health coaching from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. She has a private practice in Natick and specializes in holistic health, nutrition and Lyme disease.

Genealogy Group Guest Speaker. Sharon Christenson of the Massachusetts Genealogical Council and the Massachusetts Society of Genealogists will join us to discuss the Legacy Quick Guide, a handy resource for finding Massachusetts ancestors. Wednesday, May 11, at 7 p.m. All are welcome.

3D DESIGN WORKSHOPS. On Thursday, June 30, at 7 p.m., 3D artist Eric Carlsen and assistants will return to the library to introduce teens and adults to the process of creating 3D models using Blender, a powerful and sophisticated 3D design tool. We plan to print out the creations. Eric will also give an “Advanced Blender” workshop for people who are already familiar with Blender on Thursday evening, May 26, at 7 p.m. Workshop attendance needs to be limited, so registration is required. Manga workshop for teens. Manga Artist Kat Klockow will talk about all the steps that go into drawing comics and the cultural differences and similarities between Japanese manga and American comics. For teens in grades 6 through 12. Tuesday, May 31, from 2:45-4:15 p.m.

ONGOING KIDS’ PROGRAMS

  • Storytimes! We offer two storytime groups for young children in the library’s Raytheon Room:
    • Mother Goose Time is a storytime for babies and toddlers (to 2.5 years). Tuesday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
    • StoryVine introduces preschoolers ages 2.5 to 5 years to books and reading. Most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack, Thursday, May 5, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for babies-preschoolers with caregiver
  • Parent/Child Book Group, Wednesday May 18, 7-8 p.m. for fourth and fifth graders with a parent, May’s book is “My Name is Not Friday” by Jon Walter
  • Spanish Storytime, Wednesday, May 25, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old. Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.
  • STEAM Team, Wednesday, May 25, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 5 and up. Paper Planes and Parachutes! What makes an airplane fly and a parachute float? Let’s discover aerodynamics together and test out our theories!
  • Zumba Kids Jr, Tuesday, May 31, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old. Rhythm and dance program led by Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio.

WAYLAND INTEGRATED PLAY GROUP. The Community Partnerships for Children and Families is organizing an integrated play group in Wayland. The first meeting will be on Tuesday, May 3, from 2-2:45 p.m. This group will be led by Amanda Martin, Developmental Specialist at Criterion Early Intervention, and Beverly Mob ilia, Coordinator of the Community Partnerships for Children and Families. Children, will sing, play, and have fun together! This is a group for children ages 18 months to 3 years with parent or caregiver. Space is limited and registration is suggested. Baby and Me PLAYGROUP. Come on Friday, May 6, at 10:30 and hear Julie Hanes, Developmental Specialist from Criterion Early Intervention, speak about Developmental Milestones. “Baby and Me” is an informal playgroup for children ages 2-12 months and their parents/caregivers facilitated by Beverly Mobilia of Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families. On the morning of May 13 Dossie Khan, clinical psychologist from the Wayland Public Schools, will speak about Social/Emotional Development.

Mutt-i-grees in the Library. At our Mutt-i-grees program, children will learn about pets and responsible pet ownership, make their own Mutti-i-grees puppet, and listen to a story about getting a pet. The Mutt-i-grees program is designed to enhance children’s self and social-awareness, relationship skills, and empathy. For ages 3 and up. Wednesday, May 11, 3-3:45 p.m.

Listening to the Rolling Rivers: Three Rivers, One Story. In honor of the National Park Services 100th anniversary, the SuAsCo Wild and Scenic River Stewardship Council is sponsoring award-winning storyteller Tony Toledo in the library’s Raytheon Room on Saturday, May 21, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Come hear the fascinating story of our rivers, their colorful history, and some very special places. This free program is made possible through the generous support of the National Park Service and in part by a grant from the Wayland Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency. Suitable for ages 6 and up.

HANDWORK GROUP. This group, led by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. Upcoming dates are: May 4 and June 1.

INTERNET PRIVACY FOR LIBRARY PATRONS, Thursday, May 19, 7-8:30 P.M., Join Library Freedom Project founder Alison Macrina for a discussion of how you can better maintain your privacy from government snoops, corporate trackers, and the hacking industry.

FOREIGN FILM SERIES, On Tuesday, May 10, at 6:30 p.m. we will screen “The Wedding Banquet (Xi Yan),” which brought film director Ang Lee to international prominence. (Mandarin with English subtitles, 106 minutes)

MAY BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS. The library runs several adult book groups, and new members are always welcome. For more information about any of the groups, call the library at 508-358-2311.
