EAST TIMOR AND INDONESIA: A TURBULENT HISTORY, A PEACEFUL REBUILDING
Photojournalist Barry Pell will be at the library on Monday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. to talk about East Timor, which is located north of Australia and is one of the world’s newest nations. After 24 years of war to establish independence, the Timorese are now getting on with rebuilding their nation. Pell’s photography will explore the charm and grace of the Timorese people and landscape and the seemingly unlimited potential of the country, as well as the fascinating culture and history of the nearby Indonesian archipelago.

“DREAM HOUSE” WITH CATHERINE ARMSDEN
On Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m. San Francisco-based author Catherine Armsden will discuss and read from her debut novel, “Dream House,” a story about family, love, and the power of houses that shape our lives. According to reviewers, in this book Armsden “confronts, dissects, and embraces the very idea of home: what it means to have one, to lose one, and ultimately, to make one of our own choosing.”

FRIENDS BOOK AND BAKE SALE
The Friends of the Wayland Public Library will sponsor their Spring Book and Bake Sale in the Large Hearing Room of the Town Building on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, May 1, from 12-4 p.m. There will also be a preview for members of the Friends on Friday, April 29, from 5-8 p.m. Memberships will be available at the sale starting at 4:30 p.m. Sale items include delicious baked goods and thousands of quality books in good condition for children and adults. All proceeds go to support Wayland Library programs and services. Donations of books will be accepted during set-up in the Large Hearing Room on Wednesday, April 27, and Thursday, April 28. Donations of baked goods will be accepted from Friday until the end of the sale on Sunday. Internet book scanning devices are not permitted in the sale area. Bakers Needed! The Friends are looking for bakers to contribute confections to the fall book sale. Baked goods attract sweet lovers of all ages to the sale and add substantially to the bottom line. KIDS’ VACATION PROGRAMS

• Big Ryan’s Tall Tales, Tuesday, April 19, 2:30-3:15 p.m. for ages 4 and up, Storyteller Big Ryan will entertain children with puppets and music.
• Recycled Art Workshop Wednesday, April 20, 3-4 p.m. for ages 7 and up Local artist Gwen Irish will teach children how to make art out of recycled materials. Registration required through our event calendar at waylandlibrary.org.
• Creature Teachers: Animals Around the World. Friday, April 22, 10:30-11:30 a.m. for ages 4 and up. Take a trip around the world and find out where our animals come from. This program explores the diverse habitats of our planet and the animals that live within them.

DROP-IN CRAFT: MOTHER’S DAY CARDS. Wednesday, April 27, 3-4 p.m. for ages 4 and up Remember Mom on Mother’s Day! Children are invited to make Mother’s Day cards in this workshop led by local art educator Ashley MacLeod.

TINKERCAD FOR OLDER KIDS. On Thursday, April 28, from 4-5 p.m. librarians Matt Amory and Amy Horning will introduce kids (4th grade and up) to the process of 3D Printing and creating 3D models using TinkerCAD, a super-fun 3D design tool. BABY AND ME: MASSAGE. Sheryl White of Baby Kneads will lead a one-time introductory baby massage workshop on Friday, April 29, from 10:30-noon. She will give guidance to parents and caregivers about how to massage, relax, and soothe their newborn to pre-crawling baby. All of the techniques will be demonstrated on a doll and parents/caregivers will practice the strokes on their own babies during the class. Please bring a baby blanket!

ONGOING KIDS’ PROGRAMS

• Storytimes! We offer two storytime groups for young children in the library’s Raytheon Room:
  • Mother Goose Time is a storytime for babies and toddlers (to 2.5 years). Tuesday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
  • StoryVine introduces preschoolers ages 2.5 to 5 years to books and reading. Most Thursday mornings from 10:30-11 a.m.
• Parent/Child Book Group Tuesday, April 19, 7-8 p.m. for fourth and fifth graders with a parent. April’s book is “Paper Wishes” by Lois Sepahban.
• Read to Corbyn the Samoyed Tuesday, April 26, 3:30- 4:30 p.m. Children of all ages are invited to drop in to read to Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed.
• Zumba Kids Jr Tuesday, April 26, 10:3-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old Rhythm and dance program led by Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio.
• Spanish Storytime Wednesday, April 27, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old. Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.

COOKBOOK NIGHT!  Chuck Williams, Proprietor of Eagle Trading Books will present a program on the history of cooking and cookbooks in the United States followed by an opportunity to have one of your cookbooks appraised on Wednesday, April 27, 7-9 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room. JON SAXTON WITH AN INSIDER’S LOOK AT THE EXPERIENCE OF SINGING IN THE CHORUS OF THE BOSTON SYMPHONY AND BOSTON POPS. Come to the library on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. to hear an account of what it’s like to audition for, prepare, and perform with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, one of the world’s premier symphonic choruses, and the official chorus of the Boston Symphony and Boston Pops. Jon’s presentation will include a quick introduction to some fundamentals of the musical score and singing, as well as excerpts from live performances. Jon Saxton is a bass-baritone in his tenth year with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus. He has sung in almost 300 performances, including Carnegie Hall, and on the 2007 BSO European Tour led by Maestro James Levine. He is the chair of the Wayland Cultural Council and is in his fourth term as the chair of the Chorus Committee of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus.
