News and Events from the Wayland Library, April 8, 2016

LIBRARY HOURS. On Monday, April 18, the library will be closed for Patriots Day.

LIBRARY ARTICLES AT TOWN MEETING. The Board of Library Trustees encourages residents to attend Annual Town Meeting, which begins Thursday, April 7 at 7:30 p.m., and vote YES on Article 17, 18, and 19. The Trustees are sponsoring these three articles for consideration because they are essential steps in the completion of the Planning and Design Study funded by Special Town Meeting last fall. To qualify for a state library construction site, the Trustees must investigate at least two sites. One of those sites will clearly be the current site of the library at 5 Concord Road. Articles 17 and 18 will allow the study’s architect to investigate the former DPW site or 202 Old Connecticut Path near Greenways. Article 19 will allow the library building to be connected to the municipal wastewater system, which will allow the removal of the septic tank. This will expand what is considered “buildable land” at the current library site and give the architect the most flexibility in the investigation.

east timorEAST TIMOR AND INDONESIA: A TURBULENT HISTORY, A PEACEFUL REBUILDING. Photojournalist Barry Pell will be at the library on Monday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m. to talk about East Timor, which is located north of Australia and is one of the world’s newest nations. After 24 years of war to establish independence, the Timorese are now getting on with rebuilding their nation. Pell’s photography will explore the charm and grace of the Timorese people and landscape and the seemingly unlimited potential of the country, as well as the fascinating culture and history of the nearby Indonesian archipelago.

According to reviewers, in this book Armsden “confronts, dissects, and embraces the very idea of home: what it means to have one, to lose one, and ultimately, to make one of our own choosing.”
