Phone Scam from fake IRS agent

There have been recent reports of scams involving fake calls from an IRS agent. The person on the line introduces himself as an IRS agent, gives an iD#, and goes on to tell you that you are being criminally charged with tax evasion and that the police are on their way to your house to arrest you. The scam is to have the individual pay to stop the arrest. These calls have been on the increase as people are filing their returns.

Note that the IRS doesn’t request prepaid debit cards or wire transfer payments, and will not ask for a credit card number over the phone. The IRS contacts taxpayers by mail.

The Better Business Bureau offers this advice about IRS phone scams.
