HOLIDAY HOURS. The library will be closed all day Monday, January 18, for Martin Luther King Day.

LandryTECH VISIONARY JOHN LANDRY TO SPEAK AT THE LIBRARY. Landry’s talk, “Bustin’ Through the Barriers to Innovation and Economic Growth,” will provide a lively discussion on the myriad obstacles artificially suppressing continuing innovation and economic growth, including immigration policy and low representation of women in the upper echelons of the tech and investment sectors. Landry will offer his ideas on what should be done to remove those obstacles. This Great Presenter’s program will be on Tuesday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m.

3D DESIGN WITH TINKERCAD. On Thursday, February 4, from 7-8:30 p.m.,3D artist Eric Carlsen will guide teens and adults through the process of creating their own 3D model using Tinkercad, an easy and fun 3D design tool. We will be printing out the creations! Workshop attendance needs to be limited, so registration is required. You MUST be 12 or older to register on your own, but we encourage parents of younger kids to register and design with their children. GENEALOGY GROUP MEETING. Want to explore your family history or are you currently in the middle of a genealogy project? The second monthly meeting of the library’s new genealogy group will be on Wednesday February 10 at 7 p.m. Come connect with fellow genealogists for inspiration and support. Librarian Rachel Sideman-Kurtz will be on hand with guidance and resources. She is also available for one-on-one research assistance at other times to get you started or help find a missing piece of information. For more information, contact Rachel at rsideman@minlib.net.

UPCOMING KIDS’ PROGRAMS

  • ocean countingStory/Craft with Illustrator Shennen Bersani. Wednesday, January 20, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for ages 4 and up.  Wayland illustrator Shennen Bersani will read to children from “Ocean Counting: Odd Numbers,” a picture book that she illustrated, talk about how she became an illustrator, and lead children in a simple craft. Her artwork will be on display in the Raytheon Room in January.
  • Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration. Saturday, January 23, 2-3 p.m. for ages 4 and up
    Children will listen to a story, sing songs, play a game, make a craft, and enjoy a traditional treat during this program in celebration of the Lunar New Year. This program is run by the Wayland Chinese American Association
  • Zumba Kids Jr.  Tuesday January 26, 10:30-11 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old
    Rhythm and dance program led by Patty Howard of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio.
  • Read to Corbyn the Samoyed. Tuesday January 26, 3:30-4:30 p.m. for elementary students Children are invited to read to Corbyn, a beautiful Samoyed. This is a drop-in event
  • Spanish Storytime.  Wednesday January 27, 10:3-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old with a caregiver. Stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish.
  • 1000booksbeforekindergartenStart the New Year with an Early Literacy Challenge! Join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program at the Wayland Public Library. Beverly Mobilia, Coordinator, Wayland Community Partnerships for Children and Families, and Youth Services Librarian Pam McCuen will lead two storytimes at the library (for babies to 3 years old with caregivers) launching the 1000Books Program:  Fridays, January 29 and February 19 at 10:30.  1000 Books Before Kindergarten promotes reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers, and encourages parent/child bonding through reading aloud.  The Wayland library provides the reading logs, incentive stickers, booklists, books, and encouragement. Research tells us that reading aloud to your young children gives them a huge boost when they start school…children will be familiar with many stories and have a large word bank to draw from.  Learning to read will be that much easier.  Also, reading aloud to your child is fun, and a great opportunity for parent/child bonding. For more on this nonprofit program, go to their webpage at  www.1000booksbeforekindergarten.org
  • Cradles to Crayons PJs DriveCradles to Crayons PJ Drive at the Library.  February is just around the corner and with it comes the annual Cradles to Crayons/Boston Bruins PJ Drive. It runs February 1st through March 15, 2016. This year’s goal is to collect over 6,750 new pajamas to keep children feeling warm, safe, and ready to learn and valued.  The Wayland Library will have a collection box downstairs near the Children’s Room.  Please consider donating to help keep kids warm in PJ’s this winter…

LATE NIGHT STUDY HOURS FOR WHS STUDENTS
During Wayland High School exam week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. for high school students who want to study for mid-terms on January 26, 27, and 28. We will serve pizza at 5:30 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.

LIBRARY TECH WORKSHOPS  Introductory workshops to help you keep up with technology. Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Using Contacts and Calendar on the iPhone/iPad, Friday January 22, 10-11 a.m.
    Find out new uses for the “Contacts” on your iPhone or iPad. Learn how to use the calendar and get reminders about appointments. As time allows, we will also cover miscellaneous tips such as copying and pasting, and how to send texts and emails hands-free.
  • Social Media Morning, Monday, January 25, 10-11 a.m.  Social Media are transforming communication for people and the organizations and businesses they work with. “Social Media Morning” is an introduction to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, Google Plus, and LinkedIn for people curious to know more about sharing on these platforms.

we are all completely beside ourselvesUPCOMING BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS.  The library runs several adult book groups, and new members are always welcome. For more information about any of the groups, call the library at 508-358-2311.

FEBRUARY FOREIGN FILM   Our next foreign film, Girl on the Bridge will screen on Tuesday, February 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. A woman’s long history of bad luck starts to change when she puts her life on the line in this romantic drama.  (French with English Subtitles, 90 minutes)

MANAGING ANXIETY WITH ENGERY MEDICINE.  Do you have anxiety or fear? Many people do. Learn Eden Energy techniques that may help. Rachel Rice, Wayland resident and Founder of Five Rhythms Consulting will introduce the role the Triple Warmer Meridian plays in fight, flight, or freeze response, how this impacts the body’s energies, as well as various techniques that can be used to bring the energies back into balance. Tuesday, January 19, 7-9 p.m.

HANDWORK GROUP.  This group, led by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work. We meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 10-12 a.m. to share ideas and resources in the Raytheon Room. If you have any questions please call or email annbmoses@gmail.com or 508-358-7113.
