THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! The Library Trustees and Library Staff thank Wayland residents for their generous support of Article 6 at Special Town Meeting. The study will allow us to explore the possibilities for expanding the library with state grant money that could pay for 45% of eligible construction costs

THANKSGIVING HOURS The library will close Wednesday, November 25, (the day before Thanksgiving) at 6 p.m. and remain closed until we re-open at our usual time on Saturday, November 28, at 10 a.m.

FAMILY SING-ALONG WITH DAVID POLANSKY During the Wayland Center Holiday Open House, on Sunday, December 6, from 3-4 p.m., musician David Polansky will get us all singing traditional and new songs that celebrate the winter season and holidays. David has written many award-winning songs and as a result of being a musician for so many years, his repertoire of standards is enormous. For the most part, if you wish to hear it, he can play it. So, come with your requests!

HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE 21st CENTURY: WHO NEEDS IT? On Tuesday, December 1, at 7:30 p.m. our Great Presenters Series features Wayland resident Dr. Antoinette Hays, President of Regis College. Dr. Hays will discuss how we can ensure that our whole population receives an education that will allow full and continuing participation in this dynamic period of American economic history. At Regis, Dr. Hays has been instrumental in developing and implementing new programs. Dr. Hays received her doctorate from the Heller School, Brandeis University. In addition to her expanding roles at Regis from Professor to Dean to President, she has, since 2007 (pre-Haitian earthquake), co-developed the Regis College Haiti Project aimed at educating Haitian nursing faculty.

YOUTH IN PHILANTHROPY PROGRAM On Monday, November 16, at 7 p.m. Jennifer Ubaldino, Program Officer with the Foundation for Metrowest, will talk at the library about creating a culture of philanthropy with teens and how to get them involved. Jennifer is an instructor in the foundation’s Youth in Philanthropy Program (YIP) launched in 1997. It remains one of the largest youth philanthropy education programs in the country. Through a unique real-world approach, YIP provides local youth the knowledge to become leaders in our community by learning the importance of philanthropy and the needs that exist in our backyard.

NaNoWriMo NaNoWriMo (which stands for National Novel Writing Month) challenges participants to write 50,000 words over the course of the month and encourages them by offering Write-In events that provide support and inspiration. The library is holding a Write-In on Tuesday, November 24, from 6-9 p.m. where we won’t hold you to a word count but offer the opportunity to get started writing and connect with other writers. Bring your laptops or pads of paper and we’ll supply the coffee. Check out the website nanowrimo.org to learn more. You don’t need to work on a novel to participate!   • STEAM Team: Exploring Magnets  Wednesday November 18, 3-4 p.m. for children ages 5 and up with a caregiver.  Our STEAM Team series is for exploring science, technology, engineering, arts, and math together. Today we will read a story together and then explore the cool properties of magnets!
  • Parent/Child Book Group.  Tuesday, November 17, 7-8 p.m. for 4th and 5th graders with a parent. November’s book is “Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms” by Katherine Rundell.
  • Zumba Kids Jr.  Tuesday, November 24, 10:30 a.m. for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old.  Rhythm and dance program led by Patty Howard of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio.
  • Spanish Storytime  Wednesday, November 25, 10:30-11 a.m. for ages babies to 5 years old.  Children and their caregivers are invited to join us for stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish. Niños y sus cuidadores están invitados a una sesión de cuentos, canciones y juegos con los dedos en español.
  • Lego Club Wednesday, December 2, 3-4 p.m. for ages 5 and up.  Children will make fabulous creations out of Legos. This month’s theme: Star Wars
  • Sing-along with Jeannie Mack Thursday, December 3, 10:30-11:15 a.m. for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with caregiver. Jeannie Mack will perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs geared for young children.
  • Book Buddies  Monday, December 7, 3-4 p.m. for children in grades K to 3 with a parent/caregiver.This parent/child book group is jointly run with the WCPA. All are welcome.

VIDEO GAME TOURNAMENT FOR TEENS Teens, celebrate International Games Day at the Library with a video game tournament, board games, snacks, prizes, and fun! For teens in grades 6-12. Saturday, November 21, 2-4 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room.

LIBRARY TECH WORKSHOPS   We are offering some introductory workshops to help you keep up with technology. Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Intro to Gmail, Tuesday, November 10, 2-3 p.m. Many people are switching to Gmail. Find out how Gmail divides email into categories to reduce junk mail in your inbox. Learn how to customize your account so that it looks and functions in ways that suit you. We will also take a brief look at Google Drive.
  • Apps for Organization, Friday, December 4, 11 a.m.-12 noon. If you have an iPhone or iPad, there are some great apps to help you keep organized. Come to a class where we will learn about Grocery IQ, Paperless, and GoodReads. You’ll also learn some organizational tips built right into your device. Please come to class with your Apple I.D. and password.
  • Intro to the iPhone/iPad, Wednesday, December 9, 2 p.m. You have some experience with your iPhone/iPad, but feel like you need some help with the basics. We’ll discuss organizing icons, the difference between SIRI and dictation, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad to class.
  • OverDrive: The Library eBook App, Monday, December 14, 2-3 p.m.  Discover how easy it is to find, reserve, and download library ebooks and eAudiobooks. You’ll also learn how to modify the print size and color, and how to create bookmarks. Bring your Apple ID and password.

ONE-ON-ONE TECHNOLOGY HELP  Need assistance with downloading an eBook? Not sure how to use SIRI on your iPhone or iPad? Need to learn how to create group contacts in your Gmail account? Maybe we can help! Schedule a one-on-one appointment for assistance with basic technology questions. HANDWORK GROUP   This group, led by Ann Moses, welcomes any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work.
