In the News…
News from the past week

    • Wayland officials aim to fend off computer hackers. Significant strides have been made in beefing up IT security in town since February, when hackers attempted to make off with nearly $4 million from Wayland’s municipal coffers. Real solutions are long-term, however, and preventive measures have to be monitored constantly, IT expert Mike McCann of Advent Consulting told the Board of Selectmen recently.

    • Two Wayland boards violated state’s Open Meeting Law. The Wayland School Committee and Finance Committee both violated the state Open Meeting Law, according to decisions last week from the Attorney General’s Office. The rulings came after complaints were filed by a local attorney and the MetroWest Daily News.

Textile PTO Fundraiser. A new fundraising opportunity to support the Wayland PTO has arrived at each Wayland school and at the Transfer Station. The Wayland PTO Green Team has partnered with Bay State Textile to provide donation boxes for textiles in “good, bad and ugly” condition. In addition to gently used clothing, these bins will also accept items that others do not including stuffed animals, highly worn or stained clothing, and even a single shoe! The only requirement is that they are clean and dry. Over 520 million pounds of textiles are disposed of at incinerators or landfills in Massachusetts, of which 95% can be reused or recycled. Bay State Textiles reuses 45% of the textiles here in the U.S. and overseas and the rest is recycled or reprocessed. This is considerably higher than with many other donation bins. The average American discards 70 pounds of textiles a year. In Wayland that equates to 455 tons. Turn your unwanted clothing, backpacks, shoes and linens into revenue for the Wayland PTO.

Friday and Sunday, August 14 and 16, Opera del West presents The Marriage of Figaro, The Center for the Arts in Natick.   Artistic Director, Eve Budnick of Wayland, had been hoping to put on The Marriage of Figaro for a number of years, and as her company, Opera del West headed into its 10th anniversary year, this seemed like just the time. She brought on the Stage Director who directed The Seagull last year, and they decided to place the show in the 1950s. The double standard for men and women’s fidelity can be seen as easily in Mad Men as in Figaro. This will be a large production with cast members from previous shows, as well as talented newcomers. As usual, the intimacy of The Center for Arts will provide a way to see, hear, understand and empathize with Mozart’s well conceived characters.

A Mozart classic based on the comedy of class warfare by Beaumarchais. Will Figaro be able to marry Susanna before his master, the Count, gets his lascivious hands on her? It will take deception, intrigue, and masquerade to reach a happy ending. Sung in Italian with English supertitles. Stage Direction by Brenda Huggins and Music Direction by Eve Budnick. Performances are: August 14 at 8pm and August 16 at 2pm.  Admission is $25, $20 for TCAN members.  The Center for Arts in Natick
