News and Events from the Wayland Library, May 29, 2015


STARTING JULY 1—EXPANDED HOURS!  Actually, they’re our old hours, but we lost them for a while. Now they’ve been restored by the town, so you can enjoy the library until 9 p.m. on Thursdays and 6 p.m. on Fridays. That’s four more hours a week to take advantage of all our great services!

SUMMER HOURS.  Our summer weekend hours start on Saturday, June 27. During the summer, the library will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and closed on Sundays. We will be closed over the Independence Day weekend from Friday, July 3, through Sunday, July 5.

BOOK LAUNCH TO HELP KIDS IN NEED  Join local author Tilia Klebenov Jacobs in the library’s Raytheon Room on Tuesday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. as a cast of talented actors performs a staged reading of part of her new novel, “Second Helpings at the Serve You Right Café.” The performance will be followed by light refreshments and discussion with the author and actors, as well as a book sale. A portion of each book sold that night will benefit Jeff’s Place, a children’s bereavement center. Tilia Klebenov Jacobs won awards for her previous book, “Wrong Place, Wrong Time.” “Second Helpings at the Serve You Right Café” was featured in Kirkus Reviews in May 2015.

AUTHOR CARRIE RUSSELL  On Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m., 1996 Wayland High School graduate Carrie (Schneider) Russell will be at the library to talk about her book, “Drowning Cactus.” She describes it as literary fiction that explores the transformative power of wilderness. The novel follows a cactus thief and an urban gardening instructor on a journey across the American landscape, from the Sonoran Desert to Walden Pond.

PIZZA/STUDY NIGHTS FOR WHS STUDENTS.  During Wayland High School finals week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. on the evenings of June 17 and 18 for high school students who want to study for exams. We will serve pizza a little after 5 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.

BRAINBUILDING PAJAMA STORYTIME.  Songs, puppets, stories and fun! Beverly Mobilia, coordinator of Wayland’s Community Partnerships for Children and Families, will lead this Pajama Storytime. There will be a special guest reader! For ages 3 and up in the Children’s Room on Wednesday, June 3, from 6:30-7:15 p.m. 

PARENT/CHILD BOOK GROUP.  On Saturday, June 6, at 10:30 a.m., kids in Grades 4 and 5 can come to the library with a parent and join Youth Services Librarian Pam McCuen as she leads a discussion of “A Snicker of Magic” by Natalie Lloyd. After we talk about the book, we’ll decide together what next month’s book will be. Call the Children’s Room at 508-358-2308 with questions or to register for this program.

JUNE BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS.  Our book groups generally meet monthly during the school year. Upcoming dates are:

  • Evening Book Group.  Monday, June 1, 7 p.m., “Uncle Fred in Springtime” by P.G. Wodehouse
  • Armchair Travel Book Group.  Wednesday, June 10, 11:30 a.m., “Radio Shangri-La: What I Discovered on my Accidental Journey to the Happiest Kingdom on Earth” by Lisa Napoli
  • Noontime Book Group.  Friday, June 12, 12 noon, “Stoner” by John Edward Williams

LIBRARY WORKSHOPS.  The library is running some workshops, described below, to help people keep apace with the techy world. Space is limited, and registration is recommended for all classes. Register by going to “Events” at waylandlibrary.org or by calling the library at 508-358-2311.

  • Introduction to the iPhone/iPad, Friday, June 12, 10-11 a.m.  Baffled by your iPhone or iPad beyond calling and texting? Come on in. M.J. will discuss organizing icons, SIRI and the microphone, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you. Instructor: M.J.
  • google-calendar-100377775-origUsing Contacts & Calendar on the iPhone/iPad, Wednesday, June 17, 2-3 p.m. Find out new uses for the “Contacts” on your iPhone or iPad. Learn how to use the calendar and get reminders about appointments. As time allows, we will also cover miscellaneous tips such as copying and pasting and how to send texts and emails hands-free. Instructor: M.J.
  • An Introduction to Apps for iPhone/iPad, Monday, June 22, 2-3 p.m. People who have smartphones and iPads throw around the “app” word like it’s the most fashionable ice cream. Want to know about apps and how to find and download good ones from the app store? Discover some new ways to use your iPhone or iPad with various apps. Instructor: M.J. 

FOREIGN FILM SERIES  The next screening in our foreign film series will be “The Celebration,” a Danish comedy-drama that won the Jury Prize at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. June 30, at 6:30 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.

ONE-ON-ONE TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE  Need assistance with downloading an eBook? Not sure how to use voice dictation on your iPhone or iPad? Need to learn how to create group contacts in your Gmail account? Maybe we can help! Schedule a one-on-one appointment for assistance with basic technology questions. Half-hour slots are available Mondays, June 8 and July 6, from 2-3 p.m. To schedule, contact librarian M.J. Wright at 508-358-2311.

BABY SIGNING  Parents, come to the library on Thursday, June 4, from 10:30-12 noon to learn about baby signing. Signing reduces frustration and gives a baby the ability to communicate before knowing how to speak. For infants to preverbal, with a caregiver. The program will be led by Sheryl White.

SUMMER READING FOR KIDS  Summer is almost here! The theme for this year’s Summer Reading Program for children in grades preK-5 is “Every Hero Has a Story.” The library will kick off the program with a comic mime performance by Robert Rivest on Thursday, June 25, at 2 p.m. There will be other great programs throughout the summer: a puppet show, a live animal program, drop-in crafts, and visits from local heroes, including a firefighter and a police officer. Registration for “Every Hero Has a Story” begins on Tuesday, June 23. Children can sign up at the library (and get a super hero goodie bag) or online at the Children’s’ section of waylandlibrary.org. Kids can keep track of their reading online or on a paper log. We will celebrate the children’s reading with an ice cream bash on Thursday, August 13.

TEEN SUMMER READING  The theme for the Teen Summer Reading program for youth in grades 6-12 is “Unmasked.” Teens who register online at the Teen section of waylandlibrary.org and write at least one original book review will win a prize. There will also be great programs for teens this summer. Registration for this program also beings on Tuesday, June 23.
