Wayland LibraryLIBRARY CLOSED MONDAY MORNING, MAY 18.  A new gas boiler will be installed at the library on May 18, 19, and 20. On the first morning of the installation, Monday, May 18, the extremely noisy drilling into our concrete foundation will make the library an unpleasant place to be. Therefore, we will be closed that morning until 12 noon.

HOLIDAY HOURS  The library will be closed on Monday, May 25, for Memorial Day.

3D DESIGN WORKSHOPS.  We have added a couple more 3D design workshops. On Tuesday, July 21, 7-8 p.m., 3D artist Eric Carlsen will guide teens and adults through the process of creating their own 3D model using Tinkercad, an easy and fun 3D design tool. We will be printing out the creations on our 3D printer! We will also be offering a more advanced Blender workshop on Tuesday, June 23, from 7-8:30 p.m. Workshop attendance needs to be limited, so registration is required, and all participants should be at least 12 years old. For the Blender workshop, participants should have advanced computer skills. Please register through our online calendar at waylandlibrary.org.

TEEN MARIO KART Wii TOURNAMENT.  On Wednesday, May 20, from 1:45- 4:00 p.m., teens are invited to a Mario Kart Wii Tournament. There will be other video and board games as well. Open to all teens. The tournament will be run by Robert Lorino, gamer, and recent graduate of Simmons Library School. Location: Library’s Raytheon Room

AUTHOR RON MCADOW.  Ron McAdow, former executive director of Sudbury Valley Trustees and the author of a popular local river guide, has just published a novel, “Ike.” On Wednesday, May 20, at 7 p.m. Ron will be at the library to tell us about his new book, which is set in a Massachusetts town he calls Westforest. Ron will introduce his major characters and themes and describe the process of writing a first novel while in his sixties.

ZUMBA KIDS JR.  Join Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio in the Raytheon Room for a rhythm and dance program for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old. Tuesday, May 26, from 10:30-11 a.m.

FROM GARDEN TO TABLE  On Wednesday, May 27, 3-4 p.m., kids ages 4 and up can learn how to care for seedlings with our new Assistant Children’s Librarian, Amy Horning. They will taste delicious veggies with Ms. Amy and will plant seeds for their home gardens. Location: Raytheon Room

FOREIGN FILM SERIES.   The library will be screening foreign films in the Raytheon Room occasionally in the upcoming months. Our second movie, “The Deep,” is from Iceland and will be shown on Tuesday, May 26, 6:30-9 p.m. and is based on actual events. In the film a fisherman tries to survive in the freezing ocean after his boat capsizes off the south coast of Iceland. 95 minutes. In Icelandic with English subtitles. SPRING BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS.  Our book groups generally meet monthly during the school year. Upcoming dates are:

  • Introduction to DropBox, Wednesday, May 20, 10-11 a.m. DropBox is free, constantly backed-up online storage you can use for your photos and files. Come see how you can use it to organize your files and get access to them anywhere you have a web connection! Instructor: Matt
  • ipadIntroduction to the iPhone/iPad, Friday, June 12, 10-11 a.m. Baffled by your iPhone or iPad beyond calling and texting? Come on in. M.J. will discuss organizing icons, SIRI and the microphone, battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices. Be sure to bring your iPhone or iPad with you. Instructor: M.J.
  • Using Contacts & Calendar on the iPhone/iPad, Wednesday, June 17, 2-3 p.m. Find out new uses for the “Contacts” on your iPhone or iPad. Learn how to use the calendar and get reminders about appointments. As time allows, we will also cover miscellaneous tips such as copying and pasting and how to send texts and emails hands-free. Instructor: M.J.
  • An Introduction to Apps for iPhone/iPad, Monday, June 22, 2-3 p.m. People who have smartphones and iPads throw around the “app” word like it’s the most fashionable ice cream. Want to know about apps and how to find and download good ones from the app store? Discover some new ways to use your iPhone or iPad with various apps. Instructor: M.J.

ONE-ON-ONE TECHNOLOGY ASSISTANCE.  Need assistance with downloading an eBook? Not sure how to use voice dictation on your iPhone or iPad? Need to learn how to create group contacts in your Gmail account? Maybe we can help! Schedule a one-on-one appointment for assistance with basic technology questions. BOOK LAUNCH TO HELP KIDS IN NEED.  Join local author Tilia Klebenov Jacobs in the library’s Raytheon Room on Tuesday, June 2, at 7:30 p.m. as a cast of talented actors performs a staged reading of part of her new novel, “Second Helpings at the Serve You Right Café.” The performance will be followed by light refreshments and discussion with the author and actors, as well as a book sale. A portion of each book sold that night will benefit Jeff’s Place, a children’s bereavement center. Tilia Klebenov Jacobs won awards for her previous book, “Wrong Place, Wrong Time.” “Second Helpings at the Serve You Right Café” was featured in Kirkus Reviews in May 2015.

AUTHOR CARRIE RUSSELL.  On Saturday, June 13, at 2 p.m., 1996 Wayland High School graduate Carrie Schneider Russell will be at the library to talk about her book, “Drowning Cactus.” She describes it as literary fiction that explores the transformative power of wilderness. The novel follows a cactus thief and an urban gardening instructor on a journey across the American landscape, from the Sonoran Desert to Walden Pond.

BABY SIGNING.  Come to the library on Thursday, June 4, from 10:30-12 noon to learn about baby signing. Signing reduces frustration and gives a baby the ability to communicate before knowing how to speak. For infants to preverbal, with a caregiver. The program will be led by Sheryl White.
