WSCP offers Coding class for students in Grades 5-8

For the first time, WSCP is offering children in Grades 5-8 a chance to learn coding through an eight-week program called CodeCampKidz. The eight session activity is being offered after school to students in grades 5 – 8 through Community Education.
The camp program was founded and developed by Wayland resident Rian Sousa. He brings 20-plus years of experience as a software developer to this experience. Sousa describes the program as “an introduction to coding apps” and emphasizes that his approach will be both fun and achievable for young learners. Children do not need experience since the class will progress from the basics to more advanced projects. The goals include building skill and self-confidence.
Program highlights include introducing students to coding HTML5, CSS3 and javascript. They will use the student friendly, intuitive codecampkidsz eLearning platform to build projects. They will produce completed app pages. Class size will be limited to 12, making personal instruction and assistance on projects possible.
Codecampkidz is being offered to Grade 5 students at Happy Hollow (Tuesdays) and Claypit Hill Schools (Thursdays) and to Grades 6 -8 at Wayland Middle School (Wednesdays).  There will be 8 classes, and the fee is $160.  Grade Five students do not need any materials. Middle School students will use their Google Chromebooks.
The registration deadline is February 27th and class sizes will include a minimum of five students and a maximum of 12.
