Wayland LibraryHOLIDAY HOURS. The library will be closed on Monday, January 19, for Martin Luther King Day.

DECONSTRUCTION DAY. Teens, on Tuesday, January 27, from 2:45-4:45 p.m. bring old computers and other electronics to the library’s Raytheon Room to deconstruct and figure out how they work! Salvage useful parts for other projects. You might even be able to fix things if we discover how they are broken. Engineer and maker Kevin Osborn will lead this workshop. For tweens and teens in Grades 6 and up. This program is federally funded by an LSTA grant awarded by the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. 

THE “NEW” LIBRARY CATALOG. The library catalog is sporting a new look, but don’t panic! Yes, it looks a lot different, but it’s really not—except for some cool new features that actually make it easier to find what you want. On Monday, January 26, at 7 p.m. in the Raytheon Room reference librarian Andy Moore will guide you through the non-intricacies of the new Minuteman catalog. You’ll feel a lot more relaxed and confident—in fact, like a librarian!

Read to LILY THE LABRADOODLE. Children are invited to read to Lily, a beautiful black labradoodle, in the library’s Raytheon Room on Saturday, January 24, from 1-2 p.m. Call 508-358-2308 to sign up for a 15 minute slot. Lily and her owner Marne, are certified through Dog B.O.N.E.S. to give read-to-a-dog programs.

BOOK BUDDIES. Book Buddies is a parent/child book group for children in grades K-3 with a parent/caregiver. This month’s book is “A Brand New Day” by Wong Herbert Yee, and we will be meeting on Thursday, January 22, 3-3:30 p.m. We will discuss the book and do an activity. All are welcome. Youth Services librarian Pam McCuen will facilitate this program, which is co-run by the WCPA. Please read the books with your child before you come.

How to Find Your Next Great Read. Do you struggle to find a good book to read, often wandering bookshelves for something that grabs your attention? Or, do you read the latest bestsellers or recommendations from friends to find those disappoint you? If so, this workshop scheduled for Tuesday, January 27, 1-2 p.m. is for you. Librarian Rachel Sideman-Kurtz will introduce you to online tools that will make finding your next great read easy and fun. Tools include Novelist, Books and Authors, and GoodReads. Workshop limited to 10. Register at waylandlibrary.org through the library event calendar on our website or call the library to reserve your spot.

  • Non-Fiction Book Group. Tuesday, January 27, 7-9 p.m., “The Hare with Amber Eyes” by Edmund de Waal
  • Evening Book Group. Monday, February 2, at 7 p.m., “The Beautiful Mystery” by Louise Penny
  • Noontime Book Group. Friday, February 13, at 12 noon, “Flight Behavior” by Barbara Kingsolver

Joy of Getting It Done with Linda King. Linda King, a trained and certified Life Coach and ADHD Coach, will present “The Joy of Getting It Done” at the library on Tuesday, January 13, at 7:30 p.m. Many of King’s clients struggle with procrastination, daunting projects, and the lack of ability to create workable routines in their lives. King tries to help them find many simple ways to make change easier. She hopes that attendees leave her talks feeling hopeful and empowered!

GROW YOUR OWN WITH RENEE  In the deep mid-winter, who is thinking about gardening? Renee Bolivar, owner of “Gardens by Renee” is! Renee will be at the library on Saturday afternoon , January 17, 2-4 p.m. to talk about how to grow, harvest, and eat from your own backyard. Renee is a passionate master gardener who has been part of the slow food movement her entire life. “Gardens by Renee” is a local and organic business created to get people growing, one seed at a time.

STUDY HOURS FOR WHS STUDENTS. During Wayland High School exam week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. for high school students who want to study for mid-terms on January 20, 21, and 22. We will serve pizza at 5:30 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.

“SOWING THE SEED: BRINGING SCIENCE TO RURAL UGANDA”. In 2009, Wayland residents Paul and Jessica Schendel went to Uganda to volunteer with a grassroots community organization. While there, they became aware of the lack of local medical services and the lack of science teaching in schools. In response to this need, they conceived the idea of the SEED Institute (Science Education to Enhance Development) to train science teachers. On Tuesday, February 3, at 7:30 p.m. they will appear as the next Great Presenters program to talk about their collaboration with local leaders in making this vision become a reality. Paul Schendel is a retired pharmaceutical R & D Executive. He spent his career working on causes and treatment of cancer. Jessica Schendel is a retired social worker working particularly with families and teenagers.

M.J.’s Apps for iPads. Tuesday, January 20, 2-4 p.m. Get the most out of your iPad. With various apps, you can resize print, eliminate ad clutter from articles, zoom in on pictures, easily identify interesting places to visit in a particular location, take a magazine quiz, or watch a video clip. Sample a selection of helpful apps hand-picked by the WPL’s own M.J. Wright. You’ll also learn how to find apps, and app reviews, yourself. An Introduction to the iPhone or iPad. If you can make a call and send a text, but are baffled by the rest of your iPhone or iPad, this is the class for you. We will discuss how to use airdrop, organizing the icons on your screen, how to download an app, saving on battery life, and other basics of these versatile and complex devices.
