EMERGING SCIENCE ON LIVING LONGER & HEALTHIER. Our first Great Presenters program for the season will be on Tuesday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. and our presenter is Dr. Vincent Guiliano. His topic is “The Prospects That Emerging Science Offers Us for Longer Healthy Lifespans.” Guiliano will cover the general state of the sciences relative to aging, the close relationships between health and aging, laboratory approaches that have extended the lives of animals, and the biological pathways that promote health and longevity. Learn about new practical things to do to be among those who desire to live healthily 10-20 years longer than average. Vincent Giuliano, Ph.D., is the chief researcher and publisher of the popular blog, agingsciences.com, and has published over 400 articles on key topics in the aging sciences in the last seven years.

MARRIAGE OF FIGARO WITH PHIL RADOFF.  Phil Radoff returns to give another opera program on Wednesday, October 15. at 7:30 p.m. This time he will guide us through Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” in advance of the Metropolitan Opera simulcast on October 18 and 22 at movie theaters. Phil is a retired lawyer with a lifelong interest in opera. He regularly offers opera courses at the Brandeis Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (BOLLI). He has given well-received talks on several operas here at our library.

MUSIC THROUGH THE DECADES WITH DAVID POLANSKY.  On Tuesday, October 21, at 7 p.m. musician David Polansky will be at the library to present a one-man show highlighting American hit songs inspired by major events in our history, (e.g., WWI, the Big Band Era, Great Depression, the Atomic Age) performed live on trumpet, keyboard, and vocals by David himself. Don’t miss this winner!

DUCKYBOTS.  Kids, join engineer and educator Kevin Osborn at a workshop on simple engineering where participants will turn rubber ducks into robots. We’ll get those lazy rubber ducks to really move! The library will supply the rubber ducks, motors, and duct tape. For kids in grades K-3. Wednesday, October 8, 3-4 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room

SING-ALONGS WITH JEANNIE MACK.  Jeannie will be here on Thursday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m. for the next Sing-Along.

CHICKENS ON THE FARM.  Farmer Anna of Land’s Sake Farm will talk to kids ages 5 and up about raising chickens on a small farm. She will bring live chickens! Farmer Anna will also read a story and lead children in a craft. Wednesday, October 15, at 3:30 p.m.

AUTHOR EVENT WITH RITA ZOEY CHIN.  Join Rita Zoey Chin, Wayland resident, poet, and author of the bestselling memoir, “Let the Tornado Come” for a “Waking to the Present Moment” walk and reflection, on Sunday, October 19, startingat 2:15 p.m. in the Raytheon Room. Rita will speak about her book and about the moment in nature when her life changed. She will then lead us outside in a quiet, contemplative walk, inviting people to pay attention to the moment, with the idea that, in the words of Mary Oliver, “the world offers itself to your imagination.” Afterward, there will be time to write about what you experienced and an opportunity to share what you’ve written. Rita will answer questions about her memoir, and she’ll conclude with a book signing–so please remember to bring your copy of the book! This event is co-sponsored by the library and Wayland Walks.

Friendslogo42kFRIENDS FALL BOOK & BAKE SALE.   The Friends of the Library will sponsor their Fall Book and Bake Sale on Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, October 26, from 12-4 p.m. There will also be a preview for members of the Friends on Friday, October 24, from 6-8:30 p.m. Memberships will be available at the sale starting at 5:30 p.m. Sale items include delicious baked goods and thousands of quality books in good condition for children and adults. All proceeds go to support Library programs and services. The sale will be held in the Large Hearing Room in the Wayland Town Building, 41 Cochituate Road. Donations of books will be accepted during set-up in the Large Hearing Room on Wednesday, October 22, and Thursday, October 23. Donations of baked goods will be accepted from Friday until the end of the sale on Sunday. Internet book scanning devices are not permitted in the sale area. WANT TO HELP THE LIBRARY AND PERFORM COMMUNITY SERVICE?  The Friends of the Wayland Library are looking for high schools students who are willing to move donated books in preparation of the book sale. We’re looking for volunteers to move books from the freight shed in the Library parking lot to the Large Hearing Room in the Town Building on Sunday, October 19, at noon, and to rearrange boxes in the Large Hearing Room on Tuesday, October 21, at 7 p.m. Volunteers will earn two hours of community service.  No car required for either job—just a strong back! OCTOBER EXHIBITS.  On Monday, October 6, from 4-6 p.m. please join Conrad Gees at a reception for October’s Happy Hollow Photo Club exhibit in our Raytheon Room. Meanwhile our lower level display case features an exhibit of Banned Books and WHS student art is displayed in the library foyer.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP.  Our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m.–12 noon in the Raytheon Room. Next meetings are on the following Wednesdays: October 1, November 5, and December 3.
