Garden to Vase: Bringing the Outside In.  On Wednesday, September 24, at 7 p.m. Weston resident Trish Scozzafava will open your eyes to what is available in your garden for flower arrangements. Learn to make seasonal arrangements from branches, foliage, and flowers from what you see in nature. No need to buy expensive florist blooms when you can capture beautiful naturalistic arrangements by simply cutting from your own yard.

EMERGING SCIENCE ON LIVING LONGER & HEALTHIER.  Our first Great Presenters program for the season will be on Tuesday, October 7, at 7:30 p.m. and our presenter is Dr. Vincent Guiliano. His topic is “The Prospects That Emerging Science Offers Us for Longer Healthy Lifespans.” Guiliano will cover the general state of the sciences relative to aging, the close relationships between health and aging, laboratory approaches that have extended the lives of animals, and the biological pathways that promote health and longevity. Learn about new practical things to do to be among those who desire to live healthily 10-20 years longer than average. Vincent Giuliano, Ph.D., is the chief researcher and publisher of the popular blog, agingsciences.com, and has published over 400 articles on key topics in the aging sciences in the last seven years.

BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS.  

  • Friday, October 10, at noon will be the next meeting of our monthly Noontime Book Group in the library’s Raytheon Room. We will be discussing “Pavilion of Women” by Pearl S. Buck. For more information, contact Sandy Raymond.
  • Our Evening Book Group starts up again on Monday, October 6, at 7 p.m. This month’s book is “The Funeral Party” by Ludmila Ulitskaya. New members are always welcome. For more information, contact Andy Moore.
  • The Armchair Travel Book Club, led by Rachel Sideman-Kurtz, is for folks interested in going ‘round the world through a shared reading experience. We read travelogues written by all kinds of travelers who see the world in various ways. Join us on Wednesday, October 8, when we’ll be reading “Sixpence House” by Paul Collins.
  • The next meeting of our Non-Fiction Book Group, led by Nancy McMenemy-McColm, will be Tuesday, October 28, at 7 p.m. We’ll be reading “Mastermind” by Maria Konnikova. New members are always welcome at any of our groups. All of our librarian leaders can be contacted by calling 508-358-2311.

MUSIC THROUGH THE DECADES WITH DAVID POLANSKY.  On Tuesday, October 21, at 7 p.m. musician David Polansky will be at the library to present a one-man show highlighting American hit songs inspired by major events in our history, (e.g., WWI, the Big Band Era, Great Depression, the Atomic Age) performed live on trumpet, keyboard, and vocals by David himself. Don’t miss this winner!

AN INTRODUCTION TO GMAIL.   Many people have switched to Gmail from other types of email accounts. Find out how Gmail divides email into different categories so you don’t get as much “junk mail” in your inbox. Learn how to organize your email using stars, folders, and labels, as well as how to customize your account so that it looks and functions in ways that suit you. TALK ON THE IMPROVING REAL ESTATE MARKET.  On Tuesday, September 30, at 7 p.m. local realtor Brian Cichella will discuss the leading indicators for a locally improving home selling and buying market.

DUCKYBOTS.   Kids, join engineer and educator Kevin Osborn at a workshop on simple engineering where participants will turn rubber ducks into robots. We’ll get those lazy rubber ducks to really move! The library will supply the rubber ducks, motors, and duct tape. For kids in grades K-3. Wednesday, October 8, 3-4 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room.

LEGO CLUB.  Wednesday, October 1, from 3-4 p.m. is the first meeting our Lego Club where children make fabulous creations out of Legos. This month’s theme is “scary monsters.” For children ages 5 and up in the Raytheon Room.

SING-ALONGS WITH JEANNIE MACK.  This year Jeannie will be coming to the library each month to perform all kinds of fun, bounce-around, sing-along songs geared for young children. Audience participation encouraged! For babies, toddlers, and preschoolers with caregiver. The first monthly Sing-Along will be Thursday, October 2, at 10:30 a.m.

BECOME AN ESOL TUTOR.  Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on October 22. The class will meet at the Wayland Library on five consecutive Wednesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20. ZUMBA KIDS JR.  Join Julia Walderzak for Zumba Kids Jr., a rhythm and dance program for children ages 2 1/2 to 4 year of age on September 30 at 10:30 a.m.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP.  Our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m.–12 noon in the Raytheon Room. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 1. This is a group for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together. Dates for the rest of 2014 are November 5 and December 3.

BOOK BUDDIES.  On Wednesday afternoon, September 24, from 3-3:30 p.m. Youth Services Librarian Pam McCuen will lead a book group for children in Grades 1-3 accompanied by a parent/caregiver. This month’s book will be “Katie and the Sunflowers” by James Mayhew. Please read the book with your child before the session.
