News and Events from the Wayland Library, June 20, 2014

Wayland LibrarySUMMER HOURS  We will be open on Saturday, June 21, from 10-5, but closed on Sunday, June 22. During the remainder of the summer, the library will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and closed on Sunday. We will also be closed over Independence Day weekend from Friday, July 4, through Sunday, July 6.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM  Registration for the Massachusetts Statewide Reading Programs, “Fizz, Boom, Read!” for kids and “Spark a Reaction” for teens, starts Friday, June 20. Children can sign up at the library or online from the Children or Teen sections of our website, waylandlibrary.org. All kids can keep track of their reading online. Younger kids can choose to track their reading on a paper log.

SUMMER READING KICK-OFF MAGIC SHOW.  We’ll kick off our summer reading with a “Fizz, Boom, Magic” show for all ages, led by magician and juggler Scott Jameson on Thursday, June 26, at 2 p.m.

JULY CHILDRENS’ PROGRAMS

All programs in the Raytheon Room unless otherwise indicated.

  1. Kitchen Chemistry: Make a Mug Cake—Wednesday, July 2, 3-4 p.m.  Chemistry can taste good!  Children will make delicious mini cakes in their own mugs with Youth Services Librarian Pam McCuen. For ages 7 and up.  Bring your own microwave safe mug. Limited to 10 children. Register online at our Event Calendar at www.waylandlibrary.org.
  1. Mike the Bubble Man—Tuesday, July 8, 10:30-11 a.m.  Mike the Bubble Man brings magic and science to the stage with this interactive 45 minute show about BUBBLES!  Through music, choreography and comedy, bubbles in all different shapes and sizes come alive, sparking imagination and wonder. For ages 3 and up.
  1. Make art from nature with librarian Elise Katz—Wednesday, July 9, 3-5 p.m. Drop-in Nature Craft for ages 4 and up.
  1. How to Catch a Mouse: Simple Machines at Work—Thursday, July 17, 2:30- 3:30 p.m. “Jungle Jim” will be at the library to build a giant mouse trap out of balloons. Children will learn about simple machines in this hands-on workshop. For ages 4 and up.
  1. Todd Gutner on the Weather—Wednesday, July 23, 3-4 p.m. Wayland resident and CBS meteorologist Todd Gutner will talk to kids about how weather forecasting works. For ages 4 and up.
  1. Drop-in Robot Crafts—Wednesday, July 30, 3-5 p.m. Make crafty robots out of recycled materials in this program led by librarian Elise Katz. For ages 4 and up

FREE TEEN ART WORKSHOPS.  WHS art teacher Janet Armentano will offer two free workshops for teens at the Wayland Library in July. Participants will develop a small oil painting en plein air (weather permitting). Dates: Wednesday, July 16, from 3-5 p.m. and Wednesday, July 23, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Limit of 15 participants per workshop. Participants may take one or both workshops. Teens may register through our online calendar at waylandlibrary.org.

ZUMBA KIDS JR.  Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio in Sudbury will lead a rhythm and dance program for children ages 2.5 to 4 years old in the library’s Raytheon Room on Wednesday, June 25, from 10:30-11 a.m.

JUNE EXHIBITS.  During June the library foyer contains an exhibit of recent photos by Ruth and George Brawerman, entitled “New England and Florida Images.” Natick resident John Kirk Smith displays his artwork this month in the Raytheon Room.
