News and Events from the Wayland Library, May 30, 2014

SUMMER HOURS. Summer weekend hours start on Sunday, June 22. During the summer, the library will be open on Saturdays from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and closed on Sunday. We will resume regular hours after Labor Day. Our weekday hours are the same all year long.

STUDY HOURS FOR WHS STUDENTS.  During Wayland High School finals week, the library will be open late until 11 p.m. for high school students who want to study for finals on June 16, 17, and 18. We will serve pizza at 5:30 p.m. on those evenings to teens who are here during the dinner hour and will also provide some snacks throughout the evening.

SUMMER READING PROGRAM.  Summer is almost here and so is our Summer Reading Program!

fizz_boom_read_2Elementary: The theme for this year’s Massachusetts Statewide Reading Program for children in grades preK-Grade 5 is “Fizz, Boom, Read!” The library will kick off the program with “Fizz, Boom Magic!” a magic show led by Scott Jameson on Thursday, June 26, at 2 p.m. There will be other great programs throughout the summer that feature fun with science. Mike the Bubble Man will bring magic and science to the stage with an interactive show about bubbles and Jungle Jim will demonstrate how simple machines work using balloons in his show “How to Catch a Mouse.” We will also have several drop-in crafts where kids can make robots, build bridges and towers, make art from nature, and experiment with color! Registration for Fizz, Boom, Read! begins on Friday, June 20. Children can sign up at the library (and get a Fizz, Boom, Read! goodie bag) or online at the Children’s section of waylandlibrary.org. Kids can either keep track of their reading online or on a paper log. We will celebrate the children’s reading with an ice cream bash on Thursday, August 14.

spark a reactionTeens: The theme for youth in grades 6-12 is “Spark a Reaction.” Teens who register online (starting June 20 at the teen section of waylandlibrary.org) and write at least one original book review will win a prize. There will also be programs at the library for teens this summer, including art workshops led by Wayland High School art teacher Janet Armentano. There will be a pizza party on Tuesday, August 12 for all teens who participate in this program.

TUMBLR. The Wayland Library Adult and Teen Departments are now on Tumblr. Check us out at http://wayadultlib.tumblr.com/ and http://waylandteens.tumblr.com/.

NON-FICTION BOOK GROUP AT LAST!  There’s a lot of great non-fiction these days, and we’re starting a group to talk about it. Led by our own Nancy McMenemy-McColm, the first meeting is on Monday, June 16, 7-9 p.m. and the first title is Edward Slingerland’s “Trying Not to Try: The Art and Science of Spontaneity.” Come to the library and pick up a book so that you can join the conversation!

Appearance by Ted Reinstein from TV’s “Chronicle”.  On Tuesday, June 17, at 7 p.m., journalist Ted Reinstein will be at the library to talk about his book, “New England Notebook: One Reporter, Six States, Uncommon Stories,” a collection of memorable and favorite stories drawn from over fifteen years of reporting from every corner of New England. According to Ted, the program covers “the best of the best—his all-time most favorite people and places in New England.”

One Door Closes.  On Wednesday, June 18, from 7-9 p.m., the library will host local authors Tom Ingrassia and Jared Chrudimsky. They will read from and sign copies of their book, “One Door Closes: Overcoming Adversity by Following Your Dreams.” The book, which was recently named a Finalist in the Eighth Annual National Indie Excellence Awards, captures the stories of 16 people from all walks of life who triumphed over seemingly insurmountable obstacles to achieve their goals.

GREAT DECISIONS. The next Great Decisions discussion will be on Friday, June 6, starting at 9:15 AM in the Raytheon Room. The topic will be “Energy Independence.” New members are welcome to attend.

JUNE EXHIBITS. During June the library foyer contains an exhibit of recent photos by Ruth and George Brawerman, entitled “New England and Florida Images.” Most of the images are of nature and were taken recently in the local area (including Concord, Acadia National Park, and Cape Cod) and in several locations in Florida. The interplay of shapes and colors over the water surface is one of their favorite subjects. Others images include a bird standing guard amidst pine foliage, a glimpse of a deep forest, and two figures who seem to stand on top of the world. Natick resident John Kirk Smith displays his artwork this month in the Raytheon Room. He is a self-taught artist who began working with pastels six years ago. His work is based primarily on the powerful Native American photographic portfolios of Edward Sheriff Curtis, Frank A. Rinehart, and Gertrude Kasebeir.

POETRY WORKSHOP. The next two meetings of the Poetry Workshop will be June 5 and June 19. The Poetry Workshop gathers two Thursdays a month at 2 p.m. to work on writing poetry. New members, both beginners and more experienced poets are equally welcome. For more information, contact Joan Kimball at 978-318-0991.
