WALKING TOUR OF COCHITUATE
Sunday, May 18, 2914, 2pm
Meet in front of Community United Methodist Church

Cochituate Village, so named in the late 19th century, evolved from a rural farming community into a thriving shoe manufacturing village in the mid to late 1800s.  Although no factories remain, many of the dwellings for factory workers and owners alike still line the streets of this compact village center.  In celebration of Wayland’s 375th Anniversary join a walking tour led by Gretchen Schuler to learn about this important chapter of our local history.  We will meet in front of Community Methodist Church at 2pm on Sunday May 18.  If weather does not permit Gretchen will provide the walking tour by way of slides.  Gretchen’s tours are always great.  Don’t miss it!

Grout-Heard House Museum
Sponsor:  Wayland Historical Society

Did you know that there once was a plan drawn to by-pass Wayland Center that never left the drawing board?  Are you aware that the Mass. Turnpike could have been routed north of its present location?  Have you wondered just when the first roads (routes) were built in Wayland and why they were built where they are today?  New insights may be gained by thinking how Wayland’s bodies of water and hilly landscapes influenced the location of the side roads (branches) and settlements.  Come and learn more about Wayland’s streets and their names.

Sponsor:  Eastern Mass Senior Softball
Wayland Recreation Department

Come one and all to the old time baseball game between the Holliston (MASS) MUDVILLE BASEBALL CLUB and THE DIRIGO VINTAGE BASEBALL CLUB (MAINE).  This game will be held at the historic Wayland/Cochituate ball field, where organize baseball has been played for nearly 150 years.  The actual game is expected to start at approximately 12 noon but there will be some very enjoyable and entertaining practice sessions before hand.  These two clubs were formed as “non-profit, educational, and living history organizations dedicated to preserving and promoting the game of Base Ball, as it was played during its formative years in the mid-nineteenth century.”

Not only will these teams appear in their old time baseball uniforms and period equipment, but their game will be played under the original 1858-1860 baseball rules and customs.  This unique and special event should be highly entertaining as well as education for everyone.
