SCHOOL VACATION PROGRAMS
- Puppet Show. On Tuesday, February 18, from 2:30-3:30, children ages 3 and up are invited to join us for a program by “Lindsay and Her Puppet Pals.” Lindsay will bring her handcrafted life-size puppets and marionettes and will perform several silllly stories. Her charming, positive stories and lovable characters will delight the young and the young at heart. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation! For ages 3 and up.
- Drop-in Crafts: Hearts and Dragons. On Wednesday, February 19, from 3-5 p.m., children can drop in to make crafts inspired by Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year. Led by librarian Elise Katz.
Zumba Kids Jr. On Wednesday, February 26, from 10:30-11 a.m., children ages 2.5 to 4 years old can join us for a rhythm and dance program led by Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio in Sudbury.
RAINBOW LOOM WORKSHOP. Also on February 26, at 3 p.m. children ages seven and up can either bring their own looms or or use ours to make nifty bracelets in this hands-on workshop. Hot cocoa will be served.
Parent/Child Book Group FOR GRADES 4 & 5. Our book group for children in fourth and fifth grade, with a parent, will meet on Wednesday, February 26, at 7 p.m. in the Children’s Room. This month we will talk about How to Catch a Bogle by Catherine Jinks. Each month we will discuss a different book. The group will decide together what next month’s book will be.
BECOME AN ESOL TUTOR. Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Tutors often speak of their pleasure in learning about another culture and their greater appreciation for the challenges facing those who are adapting to ours. Because of the constant demand for tutoring, all available tutors are now working with students, and the next tutor-training course has been scheduled. Program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on February 24. The class will meet at the Wayland Library on five consecutive Monday mornings, 9:30-12:30. No prior knowledge of a foreign language is needed, just an openness to other cultures and the desire to share your knowledge of English. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20. Workshop for Prospective DAR Members. On Saturday, February 22, at 1 p.m. Wayland resident Kathleen Bernstein is organizing a genealogical workshop in the library’s Raytheon Room for women who are interested in joining the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). The workshop is entitled “Do You Have a Revolutionary Patriot in your Family Tree?” Volunteer genealogists will be available to help women who might be interested in finding their link to a Revolutionary War patriot and joining the DAR. Patriotic service is more than those who were in the military. It can include actions such as signing an oath of allegiance, providing supplies, or serving on a committee. WINTER EXHIBITS. In February the foyer will continue to contain acrylic paintings by artist Julia Blake of Wellesley. The lower level display case celebrates Chinese New Year. In the Raytheon Room Wayland artist Carrie Salsberg is exhibiting a variety of abstract works from acrylic paintings to mixed-media collage. Some of the works utilize hand painted papers, architect plans, maps, screening, and various collected items. Carrie is a multi-media artist currently concentrating on abstract painting and mixed-media collage. Her work has been seen in many shows throughout New England.
NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP. Our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, generally meets on the first Wednesday morning of each month from 10–noon. in the Raytheon Room. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 5. This is a group for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together. FRANK SMITH RETURNS. Heads up! Classics scholar Frank Smith will return this spring with a program entitled “Dante, Milton, and the Devil.” This course will examine the great adversary of Western literature, the Devil, as he appears in Dante’s “Inferno” and the first four books (chapters) of Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Smith will discuss the characterization of the Devil in each epic as well as the art inspired by them. Participants are encouraged to read Dante’s “Inferno,” translated by John Ciardi. Any edition of “Paradise Lost” would be fine, but Mr. Smith particularly recommends the Barnes and Noble Classics edition with introduction and notes by David Hawkes. Smith was a Fulbright scholar and is the former head of the Language Department at Wayland High School. The series will start on Tuesday, March 25, not on March 18 as previously announced. The program dates are March 25 and April 1, 8, 15, and 22 from 1-3 p.m. in the Raytheon Room.
Middle School Meditation Book Group. Calling teens in grades 6 to 8. Chat…Relax…Eat…Read…Meditate. Sound good? If so, then come to the library on Tuesday, February 25, from 7-8:30 p.m. for a meditation book group led by Dr. Dossie Kahn of Wayland Youth and Family Services. We will be discussing A Handful of Quiet: Happiness in Four Pebbles by Thich Nhat Hanh. Bring a parent sign you in.
