PROFESSOR TERESA AMABILE SPEAKING ON “THE PROGRESS PRINCIPLE: JOY AND CREATIVITY AT WORK”
What makes people happy, motivated, productive and creative at work? Wayland resident Teresa Amabile will address this question at the library on Tuesday, February 4, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Amabile is the Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration in the Entrepreneurial Management Unit at Harvard Business School. She is also a Director of Research at HBS. She is the coauthor of “The Progress Principle: Using Small Wins to Ignite Joy, Engagement, and Creativity at Work,” as well as several other books and dozens of articles. She has presented her research at TEDx, Google, Pixar, Intel and many other organizations.

SCHOOL VACATION PROGRAMS

  • Puppet Show On Tuesday, February 18, from 2:30-3:30, children ages 3 and up are invited to join us for a program by “Lindsay and Her Puppet Pals.” Lindsay will bring her handcrafted life-size puppets and marionettes and will perform several silllly stories. Her charming, positive stories and lovable characters will delight the young and the young at heart. Plenty of opportunity for audience participation! For ages 3 and up.
  • Drop-in Crafts: Hearts and Dragons On Wednesday, February 19, from 3-5 p.m., children can drop in to make crafts inspired by Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year. Led by librarian Elise Katz.
  • Zumba Kids Jr. On Wednesday, February 26, from 10:30-11 a.m., children ages 2.5 to 4 years old can join us for a rhythm and dance program led by Julia Walderzak of H2K Happy Healthy Kids Fitness Studio in Sudbury.

BECOME AN ESOL TUTOR Have you ever thought about tutoring someone in English? Tutors often speak of their pleasure in learning about another culture and their greater appreciation for the challenges facing those who are adapting to ours. Because of the constant demand for tutoring, all available tutors are now working with students, and the next tutor-training course has been scheduled. Program director Ginny Steel is currently enrolling prospective tutors for the five-session course that starts on February 24. The class will meet at the Wayland Library on five consecutive Monday mornings, 9:30-12:30. No prior knowledge of a foreign language is needed, just an openness to other cultures and the desire to share your knowledge of English. The training is free, although it is necessary to purchase a textbook for about $20. For more information or to enroll in the course, you can phone Ginny Steel at 508-358-7517 or email her.

Workshop for Prospective D.A.R. Members Wayland resident Kathleen Bernstein will present a program on Saturday, February 22, from 2-4 p.m. for women who are interested in joining the Daughters of the American Revolution. It will be a workshop that will help women find their lineage to a patriot. For more information email Kathe or call 508-358-8022.

Mother-Daughter Book Club Our Mother/Daughter book club for older girls (grades 7 and up) with their moms will meet on Tuesday, February 4, at 6:30 p.m. The group will discuss Iqbal by Francesco D’Adamo with Youth Services Librarian Pam McCuen. WINTER EXHIBITS In February the foyer will continue to contain acrylic paintings by artist Julia Blake of Wellesley. The lower level display case celebrates Chinese New Year. In the Raytheon Room Wayland artist Carrie Salzberg is exhibiting a variety of abstract works from acrylic paintings to mixed-media collage. Some of the works utilize hand painted papers, architect plans, maps, screening, and various collected items. Carrie is a multi-media artist currently concentrating on abstract painting and mixed-media collage. Her work has been seen in many shows throughout New England.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP Our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, generally meets on the first Wednesday morning of each month from 10–noon. in the Raytheon Room. However, the next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 12, the second Wednesday of the month. This is a group for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together. LIBRARY BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS Both of our library book groups for adults will meet in February. The next meeting of our evening group will be on Monday, February 3, at 7 p.m. We will be discussing A River Sutra by Gita Mehta. The next meeting of our Noontime Book Group will be on Friday, February 7, at noon and we will be discussing The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. New members are always welcome at either group.

WINTER STORY & MOTHER GOOSE TIMES We have two parent-child storytimes led by Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen. StoryVine is a story/craft hour for preschoolers ages 2.5 to 5 years most Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Mother Goose Time, for babies and toddlers, is an interactive program filled with songs, rhymes, stories, and movement on most Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Registration is not required for these programs.

FRANK SMITH RETURNS Heads up! Classics scholar Frank Smith will return in the early spring, starting Tuesday, March 18, from 1-3 p.m. for a program entitled “Dante, Milton, and the Devil.”
