Loose Change Campaign for Hatun Runa

hatunrunaJanuary 27 through January 31

On Monday, January 27th, the town of Wayland will launch its fourth annual Loose Change Campaign, created and organized by Wayland resident Antonia Hieronymus.  Over the last 3 years the Loose Change campaign has collected over $45,000 in small coins. This money has been used to equip 10 schools in small villages across remote areas of the northern Andes in Peru. We also built a new school in the village of Atuen. These quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies enhance education for hundreds of children. Just one of your pennies will buy a pencil.  In 2014 our goal is to equip 5 more schools and we need your help, please. On Monday, students will bring home small, plastic Loose Change bags. Can you find spare change in your pockets, under your couch and car seats, in your laundry area, etc. to put in the bag? During the lunch periods from Tuesday, January 28 through Friday, January 31, students will bring the change they’ve collected to our cafeteria where a person with a bucket will be waiting for coins to arrive. Too many coins for the plastic bag? Jars and cans of coins are also most welcome.  On behalf of teachers from the extremely remote mountains and jungles of Peru and hundreds of students who want to learn but don’t have the materials to do so–thank you!
