Wayland 375th Civil War Weekend

White-Wayland-375-LogoWAYLAND 375th CIVIL WAR WEEKEND, February 1 and 2. The first weekend in February is another special 375th celebration: our Civil War weekend.

On Saturday, February 1st you will have an opportunity to dance with Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln—or at least dance in the style of that time. The year was 1865 and the Civil War was raging on, yet citizens found solace in social dancing. The dances such as the Grand March and Soldier’s Joy were created to reflect the mood of the times. Come with your hoop skirt and dancing shoes to Sandy Burr Country Club on February 1 from 2 to 4 pm for a Civil War period dance led by Ruth Levin. Light refreshments will be served. There is a suggested donation of $10 or $20 for a family. No previous experience necessary, feel free to wear period clothes—no hoop skirt? No problem—just wear comfortable clothes and shoes. The dances will be taught by Wayland resident and historical dance enthusiast, Ruth Levin. Dancers of all ages are invited!

On Sunday, Lois Davis, an expert on the Civil War and curator at the Wayland Historical Society, will talk about Wayland in the Civil War. She will explore the many changes the war brought to our town. Through her talk, we will meet a number of Wayland residents—both soldiers and civilians—and learn how they navigated these tumultuous times. An exhibit of Civil War artifacts and dresses of that era is planned. The talk will take place on Sunday, February 2 at 2 pm at the Grout-Heard House Museum. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served.
