Producers are hoping that CBS News’ coverage of a horrific murder could leave a lasting impact on viewers for years — instead of just “48 Hours.” The brutal 2011 case of 18-year-old Lauren Astley, a popular and pretty 18-year-old girl from Wayland, Mass., who was killed by her ex-boyfriend Nathaniel Fujita, is the focus of a Saturday’s powerful edition of the long-running true-crime documentary series (10 p.m.). Producers believe the case will resonate so deeply with viewers that they’ve planned an all-out blitz across TV, radio and social media to call attention to a growing issue plaguing teens called “breakup violence.”

 

KHOU Houston 10/25/13: CBS show draws awareness to breakup violence. The CBS magazine “48 Hours” is using the story of a Massachusetts teenager killed by her ex-boyfriend to draw attention to the issue of violence after young people end romantic relationships. The show airs Saturday at 10 p.m. Eastern. Susan Zirinsky, senior executive producer of the newsmagazine, said Wednesday she felt the 2011 murder of Lauren Dunne Astley of Wayland, Mass., by Nathaniel Fujita could have value beyond the typical crime tale. “This isn’t just a story for us,” she said. “We feel like we can have a real impact.”
