GREAT DECISIONS GROUP
The Wayland Library sponsors a Great Decisions group that meets regularly on selected Friday mornings. New members are welcome to join. The next meeting will be on Friday, October 18 at 9:15 a.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room and the topic will be “Threat Assessment.” How can the United States address the challenges of a weak economy, homegrown terrorism and nuclear proliferation? What threats and opportunities are presented by the ascendancy of China and by regime change in the Middle East? For more information about the group, contact Steve Engler at 508-358-4980.

ESOL Tutor Training
The Wayland Library has sponsored an ESOL Program for 21 years that has trained hundreds of tutors. We have a waiting list of learners who need help, but currently lack a corresponding number of volunteers willing to tutor them a couple of hours a week. A series of five tutor training classes is scheduled at the library on Wednesdays from 6-8:50 p.m., starting on October 16. SURGICAL MISSION TO HAITI
Our 2013-2014 Great Presenters Series starts on Tuesday, October 1, at 7:30 in the Raytheon Room with a presentation by Robert C. Eyre, M.D. on his “Surgical Mission to Haiti.” Haiti, ravaged by natural disasters, diseases and generations of systemic poverty, is in need of recovery. In 2012 and 2013, Dr. Eyre made three trips there to provide surgical care and will tell us about those experiences.

PARENT/CHILD BOOK GROUP
Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen leads a monthly book discussion group for children in fourth and fifth grade, with a parent. Our next meeting will be on Monday, October 21, at 7 p.m. and the book is A Room with a Zoo by Jules Feiffer. The group will decide together what next month’s book will be. Mother-Daughter Book Club
We’ve started a new book group! This one is for girls grades 7 and up, with their moms. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, October 8, from 7-8 p.m. and we’ll be talking about The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine. LIBRARY BOOK GROUPS FOR ADULTS
Our two book groups for adults are starting up again. The first meeting of our evening group, led by Andy Moore, will be on Monday, October 7, at 7 p.m. We will be discussing Girlchild by Tupelo Hassman. Our Noontime Book Group will meet on Friday, October 11, at noon and will be discussing Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe. The noon group is facilitated by Sandy Raymond. New members are welcome at these groups, and the book lists can be found in the “Readers’ Corner” section of our website. For more information, call the library.

WAYLAND FAMILY PUBLISHES BILINGUAL BOOK
On Wednesday, October 9, at 7 p.m., Joshua, Sarah, and Yuegang Zhang will talk about their new book Silly, Silly, Mouse, a bilingual Chinese-English fantasy story. The authors are a family team: Dr. Zhang is a scientist, Joshua is 8 years old, and Sarah is 12. The Zhang family lives in Wayland. Program for ages 7 and up.

LEGO CLUB FOR AGES 6 AND UP
Kids, join us in the Raytheon Room some Wednesday afternoons to make fabulous creations out of Legos. First meeting of the year will be on Wednesday, October 2, from 3-4 p.m.

Halloween and Fall Drop-In Crafts
Come to the library and make spooktacular Halloween and Fall crafts in this drop-in program on Wednesday, October 23, from 3-5 p.m. For ages 4 and up.

Baby Signing WORKSHOP WITH SHERYL WHITE
Baby signing deepens bonding, gives babies the ability to express themselves, enhances early literacy skills, and reduces frustration for everyone! Thursday, October 3, 10:30-11:30 a.m. For babies 2 months to preverbal. To be held in the library’s Raytheon Room.

After Words” Documentary
Join us on October 15 at 7 p.m. for a screening of “After Words,” a 52-minute documentary about aphasia, an acquired communication disorder, which is often the result of a stroke, head injury, or neurological disease. Aphasia afflicts over a million Americans, yet it remains a mysterious and misunderstood condition. “After Words” illuminates the world of aphasia through profiles of people living with the condition. Filmed in Boston, it also features experts in the field of aphasia research and treatment, including neurologist-author Dr. Oliver Saks. POETS JASON TANDON & KARINA BOROWICZ
The Library is pleased to present a poetry reading with poets Jason Tandon and Karina Borowicz on the evening of Monday, September 30, at 7 p.m.

FALL BOOK & BAKE SALE
The Friends’ Book and Bake Sale is a great semi-annual community event. This fall it will take place on Saturday, October 26, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. and Sunday, October 27, from 12-4 p.m. There will also be a preview for members of the Friends on Friday, October 25, from 6-8:30 p.m. Memberships will be available at the sale starting at 5:30 p.m. Sale items include delicious baked goods and thousands of quality books in good condition for children and adults. All proceeds go to support Library programs and services. The sale will be held in the Large Hearing Room in the Wayland Town Building, 41 Cochituate Road. Donations of books will be accepted during set-up in the Large Hearing Room on Wednesday, October 23, and Thursday, October 24. Donations of baked goods will be accepted from Friday until the end of the sale on Sunday. For more information, please contact Anne Heller at 508-358-4515.

LEGACY OF ARTIST DAVID BAKER
On Tuesday, October 22, at 7 p.m. filmmaker Judy Faust presents her new film, “See What’s Whispered,” a documentary about artist David C. Baker of Jackson, New Hampshire. For over fifty years, David Baker enriched Mount Washington Valley’s cultural and community life. His Enduring influence extended well beyond the Valley, to all who encountered him. Until his death from cancer in 1999, David Baker was a dear friend and mentor to many, including Judy Faust, who involved Baker’s community in the making of this film. Baker’s art will be on exhibit in the library during October.

Needlework/Handwork Group
The next meeting of the needlework group, facilitated by Ann Moses, will be on Wednesday, October 2, from 10-11:30 a.m. The group is a place where people can get together and work on needlework and handwork projects. For more information, call Ann at 508-358-7113.
