Housing Authorities look to curb smoking

Wayland Town Crier 6/22/13: Housing Authorities look to curb smoking. Hoping to improve public health and reduce the cost to turn over apartments, several local housing authorities are weighing whether to create policies banning smoking on authority property or are implementing them. Wayland, which only has federal housing, already has a ban in place and has established designated areas outside where residents can smoke. Executive Director Brian Boggia said he has seen a significant improvement, although compliance is not at 100 percent. He said he has yet to evict someone because of smoking. Boggia said public meetings with residents about the ban brought out people on both sides of the issue who learned from each other. “Smoking really does affect other people,” he said. “You don’t need to smoke in your apartments if you go outside and smoke. People have been willing to do that.” Boggia said he gave residents a year’s advance notice about the ban.
