Presentation featuring Life and Times of Lt. Col Martin Joyce, June 10

On Monday evening, June 10th, there is a special presentation taking place at Wayland High School featuring the life and times of Lt. Col. Martin Joyce, the American appointed commanding officer of Dachau Concentration Camp a few days after its liberation. Somehow, Joyce’s entire personal records collection ended up in the old Wayland High School’s history book room, including his personal letters, an 85 page scrapbook, military files, Dachau documents, and a photo album presented to him by Yugoslavian survivors, who credit Joyce and the Americans with saving the lives of some 32,000 survivors. It’s clad in blue and gray striped fabric of prison clothing. Over the past two years students in Kevin Delaney’s US History classes have digitized the collection and wrote his story, which we will relate that evening. A highlight of the gathering will be when we turn the collection over to Judy Cohen, the Director of the Photographic Reference Collection at the Holocaust Museum, who is flying up from Washington for the occasion. Please join us at Monday, June 10th at 7:00 in the high school lecture hall (South Building).
