Mock Car Crash Demonstration on Thursday

On Thursday, May 16 the Wayland High School chapter of Students Against Destructive Decisions, along with volunteers from the Wayland Police, Fire, and Emergency Services departments, will hold their biennial mock car crash demonstration. At approximately 9:30am, students will be ushered from their classrooms to the site of a simulated car accident, complete with damaged automobiles, emergency services personnel, and a number of student actors portraying drivers and victims. The entire event will be narrated by Wayland police officers who will explain to the crowd in great detail exactly what would be happening had the mock crash been a real accident, giving students an opportunity to witness the potential consequences of drunk, drugged, and distracted driving. In addition to the mock crash, students from SADD will be running a school-wide informational campaign celebrating National Prevention Week starting Monday, May 13. Digital posters displayed around the school will warn students about the risks of abusing prescription drugs, driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana, and distracted driving. Originally known as Students Against Drunk Driving, SADD was founded at Wayland High School in 1981 by Coach Bob Anastas and a group of Wayland High School students following the tragic deaths of two students in separate and consecutive alcohol-related car crashes. The organization changed its name in 1997 in response to student requests to expand the SADD mission to prevent of all destructive behaviors and attitudes that are harmful to young people.
