SVT Hosts Fun April School Vacation Activities at Wolbach Farm in Sudbury

Sudbury Valley Trustees will be offering family events over the April school vacation week. These programs are a great for families who are interested building a connection with the natural environment in which we live through family-friendly activities. CHILDREN’S STORY WALK AT WOLBACH FARM
Date: Tuesday, April 16, 2013, Time: 10:00-11:00am
Location: Wolbach Farm, Sudbury
Deborah Costine. Artist, Storyteller, Puppeteer, Author, Amateur Naturalist will lead a fun nature exploration walk for children on Wolbach Farm’s Lewis Trail with a story that progresses along the path. Descriptions will help children look for the setting where the next scene in the story happens. It could be a rotting stump or a hole in the base of a tree or a log beside the trail. Appropriate for children four and up and their grown-up. Limited to 6 children and their grown-ups, so please register early.
This is a free event.

VERNAL POOLS KIDS’ PROGRAM
Date: Wednesday, April 17, 2013, Time: 1:00 – 3:00 pm
Location: Greenways Conservation Area, Wayland
Laura Mattei, SVT Director of Stewardship and Beth Gula, Americorps MassLIFT Land Steward will be your guides as you spend the afternoon at Greenways Conservation Area exploring vernal pools in a local forest! Play games and get hands-on to learn about these magical wetland areas and the wildlife that depend on them, including frogs, salamanders, and other macro invertebrates. Activities targeted to families with elementary school-aged youth (ages 5-11).

WOODCOCK WALK
Date: Wednesday, April 17, 2013, Time: 6:30-8:15pm
Location: Greenways Reservation, Wayland
Michele Grzenda, Weston Conservation Agent will be your guide for this wonderful spring experience. Enjoy a beautiful spring sunset while listening and watching for the incredible woodcock flight at Greenways Reservation. Male woodcocks fly in an upward spiral and make a distinctive call to attract females. Older children who want to participate should know in advance that this is an activity where remaining patient and quiet will pay-off.

SPRING DISCOVERY AT WOLBACH FARM
Date: Wednesdays, April 24 – May 29, 2013, Time: 10:00-11:30am
Location: Wolbach Farm, Sudbury
Spring is here, let’s go exploring! Where are the birds building their nests? What spring flowers are blooming in the woods? Who’s been leaving tracks and signs as they nibble on spring’s yummy buffet? Join a Drumlin Farm Teacher-Naturalist at SVT’s Wolbach Farm each week as you explore our forest and trails, meet native wildlife and enjoy stories and crafts that celebrate spring. This activity is for preschoolers or older children with parent. Come to any one session, or all six.

TRAIL-A-THON FUNDRAISER
Date: Sunday, April 28, 2013, Time: Noon
Location: General Federation of Women’s Clubs of Massachusetts Memorial Forest, Dutton Road, Sudbury
Great family event! Please join SVT for its second annual Earth Day “Trail-a-Thon.” The walk will include a 10K (6.2 miles) route or a family-friendly 3K (under 2 miles) loop. Naturalists will be stationed along the trails to introduce walkers to the many habitats existing on the property. Kids’/family activities will be offered. Refreshments will be served. Patches will be awarded. All adult walkers are encouraged to maximize sponsorship, but must be willing to commit to a $25 minimum contribution. All sponsors pledging $25 or more will receive a one-year membership to SVT, enabling them to learn more about the organization and its accomplishments. As a walker, a sponsor, or a volunteer, your support will enable SVT to continue its mission of protecting land and wildlife habitat in the watershed of the Concord, Assabet and Sudbury rivers.

Wolbach Farm is great to visit any day of the year. We welcome you to enjoy the trails for walking, exploring, nature study, photography, or other fun activities.

The main loop is ¾ mile, with a short inner loop. Then visit the Nature Nook on the porch attached to the main building. There you can further explore local plants and wildlife with crafts, games, seasonal displays, and books.
