Wayland athletes named to Globe All-Scholastics

Boston Globe Boys’ Basketball. WHS guard Jaleel Bell named Division III Athlete of the Year Behind Bell’s average of 24 points and seven assists per game, Wayland (19-5) made it to the Division 3 North sectional finals. The 6-foot-2 guard also scored his 1,000th point this season and was awarded the Dual County League MVP.

Boston Globe Girls’ Swimming. Megan Pierce named Girls’ Swimming All-Scholastic, and Wayland’s quartet (Anna Downs and Molly Pierce, Megan Pierce and Heather Wright) was their top selection in the 200 Freestyle Relay: This talented quartet cruised to the Division 2 state title in the 200 free and helping lead Wayland to an undefeated season, and a second straight Division 2 state title. They were also DCL champs in this event. As sophomores, Anna Downs and Molly Pierce are the youngsters of the group. Both have been DCL All-Stars in their first two years of varsity swimming. Megan Pierce earned individual All-Scholastic honors this season. Heather Wright was the lone junior on the squad and swam the anchor leg in 24.95 to ward off all comers and clinch the title.

Boston Globe Boys’ Swimming. Mark Karlson was selected as a Globe All-Scholastic. He qualified for states in seven different events, but captured first place in the 100 breaststroke at the Division 2 state meet, and was also part of the 200 medley relay champions. A high honor student and team captain, he will attend Brown.
