Latest update on Pelham Island Bridge

Status of Bridge Project

  • Insulation of the new water main is nearly complete. There will eventually be a cover over the pipe – probably after the gas main is installed on the same bridge platform.
  • The road at the bridge is now ready for paving.  The base layer should be installed tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 16th.  No date has been provided to us yet for the top layer.
  • The sidewalk will be poured next week, in two installments.
  • We have not been provided with a date for the installation of the guardrails; the bridge cannot be opened until that work is done.
  • We are also waiting for NStar to move the three utility poles – no dates yet on that work either, but that should not hold up the opening of the bridge before winter sets in.  The contractor may open the bridge sooner, but the latest date will be December 22nd.

More online here at the Patch: When Will the Pelham Island Bridge Reopen?. The [attached] picture says it all. It’s the first of three asphalt layers, and the thickest of them. The middle layer of asphalt, the binder layer, will be done shortly; the final coat may have to wait until spring. The raised, unpaved strip on the left in the photo is the sidewalk, which will be poured soon, maybe Thanksgiving week.
