News and Events from the Wayland Library, September 28, 2012

HOLIDAY CLOSING.  The library will be closed on Monday, October 8, for Columbus Day

BAKERS NEEDED!  The Friends of the Wayland Library are looking for a few (okay, more than a few) good bakers to contribute confections to the fall and spring book sales.  Baked goods attract sweet lovers of all ages to the sale and add substantially to the bottom line.  Bakers will receive a reminder call the week before the sale.  This year’s sale will be held on October 26-28.  If you’re interested in being added to our call list, please contact Anne Heller at 508-358-4515.

EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS WITH GARY GEKOW.  On four Tuesday evenings this fall we will be holding employment workshops with Senior Employment Specialist Gary Gekow to help people kick-start their job searches.  The first workshop will be on Tuesday, October 16, at 7pm and will be a “Resume Writing Review.”  On that date Gary will discuss resume writing in general, via a round table group format.  Participants are encouraged to bring their existing resume for confidential one-on-one analysis as time permits.  Workshops to be held later on October 30, November 13, and November 20 will address cover and thank-you letters, interviewing, and salary and benefits negotiation.

NANCY POYDAR TO VISIT THE LIBRARY.  Children’s author and Wayland resident Nancy Poydar will be at the library during preschool storytime on October 2 at 10:30 a.m. to launch her new book, Bus Driver. The next day on October 3 at 4 p.m., Nancy will talk to elementary-age kids about Bus Driver and the process of writing and illustrating a picture book–from idea to finished book.

POYDAR ART IN THE FOYER.  The foyer features the work of children’s book artist Nancy Poydar.  Nancy has written and illustrated sixteen children's picture books as well as illustrated many others. She has been a Wayland resident for forty years. Her years as an elementary school teacher in Concord, her own two children, her own childhood, and now her grandchildren, all inspire her work.  Nancy studied drawing at the Museum of fine Arts as a part of her undergraduate work at Tufts University where she majored in English and education. As a painter she is largely self-taught, using watercolor, gouache, pencil, and sometimes collage for her picture book art.  Many of her stories are about school situations and her most recent title, Bus Driver, is for preschoolers as well.

LEGO CLUB!  The next monthly meeting of our LEGO CLUB for children ages 6 and up will be on  Wednesday, October 10, 3-4 p.m.  This monthly program is an opportunity for children to use their imaginations to make fabulous creations out of Legos!  However, we need loads of Legos to allow as many kids to participate as possible.  Please drop off your no-longer-needed SMALL Lego blocks in the Children’s Room.

PARENT/CHILD BOOK GROUP.  Our new parent-child library book group will start on Monday, October 22, (7-8 p.m.).  It’s a group for children in 4th and 5th grade, with a parent.  Each month we will discuss a different book.  The first book will be Rebecca Stead's First Light.  The group will decide together what next month's book will be.  Led by Children's Librarian Pam McCuen.  For more information, call Pam at 508-358-2308.

CHILDREN’S POETRY WORKSHOPS.  Our next monthly poetry workshops for children ages eight and up will be on Wednesdays, October 3 and 17, from 7-8pm.  Children will listen to, read, and write poetry.  Led by Children’s Librarian Pam McCuen.

LIBRARY BOOK GROUPS.  We have two book groups.  The first meeting of our evening group, led by Andy Moore, will be on Monday, October 1, at 7pm.  We will be discussing The Man in the Wooden Hat by Jane Gardam.  Our Noontime Book Group will meet on Friday, October 12, at noon and will be discussing Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe.  This group is facilitated by Sandy Raymond.  New members are welcome at these groups, and the book lists can be found in the “Readers’s Corner” section of our website.  For more information, call the library.

AUTHOR WILLIAM MARTIN TO TALK.  Historical suspense writer William Martin (author of Back Bay and many others) will be at the library on Tuesday, October 23, at 7pm to talk about his latest book, The Lincoln Letter.

GREAT DECISIONS 2012.  The next Great Decisions meeting will be on Friday, October 19, from 9:15-11:30 a.m. and the topic will be “Indonesia.”

ELIZABETH BRENNAN ART.  This month the Raytheon Room contains artwork Elizabeth Brennan.  Elizabeth is a member of the Copley Society (Co-So) of Boston and graduated from Regis College as one of the first concentrators in art. She also studied Japanese art at the DeCordova Museum.  Elizabeth attended private lessons with Florence Hamlin, who was noteworthy for her copies of Old Masters and Decorative Art.  The paintings exhibited in her exhibit are renditions of both Old Masters and originals.

NEEDLEWORK/HANDWORK GROUP.  This fall our Needlework/Handwork group, facilitated by Ann Moses, will meet on the first Wednesday of each month from 10–11:30 a.m. in the Raytheon Room.  It’s a group for people to work on needlework and handwork projects together.  Any adult who quilts, embroiders, knits, or does any type of hand work is welcome.  The point of the group is to share ideas and resources, as well as chat and socialize.  If anyone has questions concerning a type of needlework, we can usually head them in the right direction.  This would be a good time to start a new project or get back to one that’s been sitting in your closet for years!  For more information, contact Ann Moses or 508-358-7113.  Dates for the rest of this year are:  Oct. 3, Nov. 7, Dec. 5, Jan. 2, Feb. 6, Mar. 6, Apr. 3, May 1, and June 5.
