Wayland board admits missteps in applying Open Meeting Law

Wayland Town Crier 9/14/12: Wayland board admits missteps in applying Open Meeting Law. The Board of Selectmen has responded to the latest Open Meeting Law complaint by local attorney George Harris with a letter to the attorney general’s office acknowledging its culpability and agreeing to Harris’ requirements for remedying the situation.
Harris’ complaint, filed on Aug. 22, alleged the board violated the law when it deliberated and voted on the consent calendar, which was not described in the meeting notice to advise the public of multiple issues to be discussed, and deliberated and voted on whether Town Administrator Fred Turkington would be authorized to speak on behalf of the selectmen at the Audit Committee’s first meeting on Aug. 6. Harris believes that topic should have been reasonably anticipated by the chairman 48 hours in advance and posted on the agenda.
