HOLIDAY CLOSING

CHANGING & CHALLENGING LANDSCAPE OF COLLEGE ADMISSIONS
On Tuesday evening, September 18, at 7 p.m. educational consultant Carol Kinlan will present a program for families that addresses the newer, more complicated realities of choosing a college in these difficult economic times.

EMPLOYMENT WORKSHOPS WITH GARY GEKOW
On four Tuesday evenings this fall we will be holding employment workshops with Senior Employment Specialist Gary Gekow to help people kick-start their job searches. The first workshop will be on Tuesday, October 16, at 7 p.m. and will be a “Resume Writing Review.” On that date Gary will discuss resume writing in general, via a round table group format. Participants are encouraged to bring their existing resume for confidential one-on-one analysis as time permits. Workshops to be held later on October 30, November 13, and November 20 will address cover and thank-you letters, interviewing, and salary and benefits negotiation.

PSYCHIATRIC MEDICATIONS: THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UNKNOWN
On September 24 at 7 p.m., Daniel Rosenn, M.D., will speak at the library on psychiatric medication issues, particularly as they obtain to young people. Rosenn is currently Medical Director of North American Family Institute. He was awarded the Mass Psychiatric Society’s 2007 Outstanding Psychiatrist of the Year.

RIKLEEN TO TALK ON “MILLENNIALS”
October 2 at 7:30 p.m. marks the start of this year’s Great Presenters Series. Our first speaker will be Lauren Stiller Rikleen who will talk on “Strengthening Intergenerational Relationships.” As adolescents and young adults, Millennials have significantly different work and communication styles from Baby Boomers and Gen Xers, with profound implications for the workplace and for their own future children. This interactive program will describe how the Millennials will likely change the way we work and play. Rikleen is president of the Rikleen Institute for Strategic Leadership and Executive-in-Residence at the Boston College Center for Work & Family in the Carroll School of Management.

BOOK GROUPS STARTING UP
We have two book groups. The first meeting of our evening group, led by Andy Moore, will be on Monday, October 1, at 7 p.m. We will be discussing The Man in the Wooden Hat by Jane Gardam. Our Noontime Book Group will meet on Friday, October 12, at noon and will be discussing Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe. This group is facilitated by Sandy Raymond. All are welcome to these groups and the book lists can be found in the “Readers’s Corner” section of our website. For more information, call the library.

AUTHOR WILLIAM MARTIN TO TALK
Historical suspense writer William Martin (author of Back Bay and many others) will be at the library on Tuesday, October 23, at 7 p.m. to talk about his latest book, The Lincoln Letter.

GREAT DECISIONS 2012
The next Great Decisions meeting will be on Friday, September 21, from 9:15-11:30 a.m. and the topic will be “The State of the Oceans.” The world’s oceans are essential to life on earth, and are tremendously sensitive to global climate change. What are the consequences of climate change on oceanic factors like biodiversity, sea levels and extreme weather systems? How can the U.S. and its international partners address the emerging challenges to this shared resource?

PERSONAL CLOUD COMPUTING E-VENING
What is “cloud computing”? How does it affect you personally? As we discuss the rise of “personal cloud computing,” we’ll explore how online resources you probably already use are part of the cloud. We’ll also show you how to use the library’s Chromebook notebook computers—available soon for library use—to share, browse and get work done in “the cloud.” Wednesday, September 26, 7- 9 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room.

SEPTEMBER ART EXHIBITS
During September the Raytheon Room contains the art of Melissa Fischer. During September the foyer contains Nature Photography by Joan Chasan.

NANCY POYDAR TO VISIT THE LIBRARY
Children’s author and Wayland resident Nancy Poydar will be at the library on October 2 and 3 to talk to both preschoolers and children in the early elementary grades about her new book, Bus Driver. Nancy has written and illustrated sixteen children’s picture books as well as illustrated many others. Her artwork will be featured in the library’s foyer during October.

BEADING WITH NORMA RADOFF
On Saturday, September 22, from 2-4 p.m., Norma Radoff returns to the library to give a workshop for beginners on working with semi-precious stones. All materials will be provided, but if you have your own beads, please DO bring them. The class is limited to ten adults. CHILDREN’S POETRY WORKSHOP
Also, in honor of “Wayland READS Poetry,” coming up later this year, we will be offering monthly poetry workshops for children ages eight and up. In this series, led by Children's Librarian Pam McCuen, children will listen to, read, and write poetry. Our first meeting will be on Wednesday, September 19, from 7-8 p.m.

POETRY WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS
And speaking of poetry, the WPL Poetry Workshop starts up again on Wednesday, September 19, at 2 p.m. in the library’s Raytheon Room.
