From Wayland to Bhutan: A journey to ‘last Shangri-La’

Wayland Town Crier 12/26/11: From Wayland to Bhutan: A journey to 'last Shangri-La'. My parents moved to Wayland decades ago for the good school system and the reasonable work commute it would provide my dad into Cambridge each day. I no longer live in Wayland, though have settled into a peripatetic existence that includes regular visits there. My own commute is about as polar opposite to my dad’s as can be – it involves the Polar Route to Asia, usually with connections in Newark, Tokyo and Bangkok before I get to work. I work in Bhutan. Long commute, big carbon footprint, but exceptional job. Wayland education shares some of the claim for this. While a teenager, I discovered a cache of National Geographic magazines dating back to 1935 in our basement. Donated by my grandfather, who deemed them too valuable to throw away, they came to rest at our house. I read all of these, usually while waiting for my mom to call me for dinner. The articles about foreign countries and peoples most caught my attention. In my senior year at Wayland High, a course in anthropology defined what fascinated me – a world full of places where life is lived in a manner very different from that of my childhood. After college I immediately embarked on my journey to explore the world.
