It’s back…  WAYLAND’S IRON CHEF II returns to Sandy Burr Country Club!   Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at 4-7pm.  SAVE THE DATE for this amazing, professionally judged, timed grilling and cake decorating competition! The ever popular “wine bottle ring toss” is back this year along with great music and so much more! Cheer on your favorite teams representing NINE different organizations. In addition to all the fun, your ticket price includes a “strolling hors d’oeuvres” reception as well as a complimentary beverage from the bar. Over 20 different caterers and restaurants including Ne Me Quitte Pas Catering, Savoury Tastings Catering, Henderson House of Weston, Water Lilies, Beyond Beans, Spice and Pepper will feature their specialties! This is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Wayland Council On Aging, Inc. GENTLE CHAIR YOGA.  Free “Try It” Wed., Sept 14, 1pm.  4 week session starts: Sept. 28.
Pre-register for 4 week session ($32); Course Instructor: Leslie Worris, The Wellness Alliance; A can-do class for beginners, those with injuries, or anyone living with special challenges, such as limited mobility or recent surgery. For students who find it difficult to transition to and from the floor, we will explore a great variety of Yoga poses, both sitting and standing with a chair assist. Increase flexibility and strength, improve balance, endurance, mobility, circulation and decrease stress. Chair Yoga encourages proper breathing and better posture. Meditation, breath work and relaxation techniques included.

TAI CHI FOR STRESS REDUCTION, Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30am, Certified Instructor: Robin Natanel

Learn to use the Tai Chi form to increase your physical balance and "sense" of balance. Tai Chi allows you to physically, mentally and emotionally feel YOUR flow aligning with the flow of nature. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, temple exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself. Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs.  Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, improve balance and reduce pain. * Tai Chi is open to non-seniors*

BETTER BALANCE “Independent and Upright Living”
Next session on the following dates: Sept 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21, $25/4 wks. All classes are on Fridays, 10:30-11:30am in the Hearing Room.
Leslie Worris of the Wellness Alliance, teaches strategies to avoid and prevent falls. Have fun while learning to improve your balance and increase strength. Using balls, bands, weights and incorporating yoga and tai chi, improve your posture, flexibility, mobility, stability, breath, endurance and maintain your independence. Pre–registration required – no less than one week before classes start. We cannot pro-rate class fee for missed classes; participants may not join mid-session.

 MEDICARE “OPEN ENROLLMENT” DATES HAVE CHANGED.  Mark your calendar: Oct. 15 -Dec. 7, 2011 is the time period to enroll or CHANGE your Medicare coverage for next year. Learn more at our MEDICARE INFORMATION SESSION , presented by SHINE Community Educator, Kathy Worhach.  Wed., Sept. 28, 10:30am; includes Q&A period. 
*This presentation will be followed by a complimentary luncheon at Noon sponsored by Traditions of Wayland. Luncheon reservations are required. This luncheon is open to all – not just those attending the Medicare Info session Limited seating so please reserve early.

Needed: BEADS! BEADS! BEADS! The Children's Holiday Shoppe Committee continues to need donations of beads (glass, stone, wooden). Your donations will be used to create lovely jewelry with the guidance of Wayland jeweler Norma Radoff. Workshops will be offered this fall to participants who wish to learn jewelry making techniques while creating pieces to be sold at the 24th Children's Holiday Shoppe in December. 

WELLESLEY COLLEGE BOTANICAL GARDENS Monday, Sept. 26, 10:00am.   NO CHARGE.
Enjoy a one-hour, docent-led tour of the Wellesley Botanical Gardens and Greenhouses. The tour is free; however, donations to the Wellesley College Friends of Horticulture are gratefully accepted. Go on your own and meet the group there (note: parking is limited—carpooling suggested), or reserve a spot on the COA van. As tour groups are restricted in size, you must register for the tour and a seat on the COA van by calling the COA. **Note: This tour involves a fair amount of walking.

ROBERT FROST FARM, Derry, NH. Thursday, Sept. 29. Depart Wayland at 10:30am – Return by 3:30pm.   Join actor, teach and tour guide Stephen Collins for this tour of Robert Frost’s farm in Derry, New Hampshire. During the 75 minute drive to the farm, Stephen will recite many of Robert Frost’s beloved poems and talk about his life and times. Once at the farm, the Park Ranger lead us on a 45 minute tour of this National Historic Landmark. There will be a stop for lunch (not included in tour price). On the drive back, Stephen Collins will continue to recite Frost’s poetry and answer questions about Robert Frost’s life.   Roundtrip transportation and admission and guided tour (does not include lunch): $30 per person.

FALL FEVER WITH THE MASTROS AT LUCIANO’S LAKE PEARL IN WRENTHAM
Wednesday, October 19. $39.95 for luncheon and show (provide your own transportation)
                           ~ OR ~ $66.95 for luncheon, show AND roundtrip bus transportation
Enjoy a luncheon and entertainment at the lovely Luciano’s Lake Pearl function center on Lake Pearl in Wrentham. Frank and Maura Mastro will perform an original show of singing, comedy and celebrity impressions. Luncheon choices are baked haddock or chicken parmesan and will include salad, vegetables, bread, dessert and coffee/tea. For those wishing to provide their own transportation to Lake Pearl, directions will be available at the COA when you register for the trip. Pricing includes all taxes and gratuity.

COA VAN: Call the COA office or refer to the calendar in the COA newsletter to see the numerous trips for Wayland residents to Market Basket in Ashland, “Around Town” errands, even the band concerts in Natick! Van will pick residents up at their homes.
