Status update from the Wayland Police (updated 9/2 11:35am)

September 2, 11:35pm

White Road is now open.  Verizon has completed their work.
Mayflower Path is open, however there are wires that need to be removed.
Jericho Lane is open to residents and emergency vehicles, however NSTAR sill has remove wires from a large fallen tree on the road.

As of 8:00 a.m. NSTAR reports that less than 1% of residents are without power.*  They anticipate that all residents should have power restored by the end of the day.

NSTAR contacted concerning the power outage to the pumps at the town wells (Baldwin Pond and Happy Hollow).  NSTAR stated that they were a placed on priority status.

* ed note:  NSTAR notes that <1% of residents are without power, but they are not calculating correctly.  They list 113 households as being without power of 5397, which is 2%


September 1,   3:45pm

All roads are now open with the following exceptions:

  • Jericho Road at #9 – This is a small cul de sac and all residents have access.
  • Mayflower Lane – Small side road, all residents have access
  • White Road – One end closed, however, it should be open shortly as telephone and cable wires are secured.  All residents have access.

The last report from NSTAR indicated there were 617 services still out.  Wayland High School still without service but listed as a priority. Currently there is an NSTAR crew working on Edgewood Road.

Scattered wires and trees remain down and residents are advised that all wires should be treated as if they are live.

 

11:45am

Happy Hollow Road is now open.  Edgewood Road is now open.  Glezen Lane will be open shortly, DPW crews are finishing up a tree removal there.

Closed Roads: White Road is closed at one end, waiting on telephone and cable to replace wires, Mayflower Road is closed, Jericho Lane is closed at #9.

A large portion of north Wayland was reenergized after the White Road reconnection of power.  These residences are not reflected in NSTAR's outage list that was posted at 8:00 A.M.

Wayland High School remains without power.  The traffic signal at Route #20 and #27 is off generator power and back on regular power.

Wayland police officers have completed well-being checks of persons on a list provided by the Council on Aging.  All checked out OK.

 

8:30am

The following roads are now open:

  • Rice Road
  • Pequot Road
  • Dudley Road
  • Shaw Drive

The following roads remain closed:

  • White Road – NSTAR crews currently on scene working that location
  • Glezen Lane at #90 – NSTAR has cleared the line, DPW on the way to remove the tree debris
  • Mayflower – Closed
  • Edgewood Road – Closed
  • Jericho Road – Closed at #9
  • Happy Hollow Road – Closed at Rice Spring Road

NSTAR work at White Road could restore power to many homes once complete.  Happy Hollow School now has power, the High School is still out.  As lines are reenergized residents are advised that secondary lines should be considered live.   Never touch a downed wire.  As of this morning about 19% of Wayland remains without power approx. 1,000 services.

 


 

August 31,  12:30pm.

Rice Road is now open to traffic in both directions.  NSTAR crews on scene working on the lines.

11:30am:  Stonebridge Road is now open in both directions.  Shaw Road is now closed at #21 due to a large tree limb falling onto wires this morning and blocking the road.  Access can be gained to #21 Shaw  Drive from Old Connecticut Path and access can be gained for the rest of Shaw Drive through Fox Meadow Lane.

 

Road closures have been set by D.P.W.

NSTAR Community Rep. advises that crews have been assigned to downed circuits in Wayland.   Currently there is a crew working on Route #30 in Wayland.

 

8:30am

Overnight Woodridge Road was opened in both directions.  NSTAR has replaced telephone poles, however, there is still transformer work that needs to be done.  Fuller Road is now open.  NSTAR crews will be working in Wayland today and we will update as projects are completed and roads reopen.  Significant damage needs to be repaired on Rice Road and on White road, these jobs could take some time and involve multiple utilities.  Residents can recharge cellphones at the Public Safety Building.

August 30, 2011, 7pm

Woodridge Rd. has re-opened for residential traffic, but power has not yet been restored. NSTAR crews have replaced the damaged utility poles on Woodridge RD., but much work is still required to repair the downed wires. I spoke with a tree crew from Ohio working for NSTAR. They are continuing work in the area, but only receiving one assignment at a time. NSTAR will continue to have crews working 24 hours a day until service is restored.

5pm

NSTAR continues to work to restore power, remove trees from power lines, and open roadways. NSTAR crews are currently working to repair the Woodridge Rd./Black Oak Rd. area. NSTAR has assigned crews to repair other areas of town, but an exact timetable of those repairs is not available. NSTAR has informed us that they will work on repairs that restore the largest numbers of customers first. Old Connecticut Path at West Plain Street (Route #126) is now open for both directions.

East Plain Street is now open in both directions.
Shawmut road is open.

Work continues on Woodridge Road, at least 4 telephone poles to be replaced, access gained to Black Oak.

Other road closures remain the same, detours in place where possible.

1:30pm

Old Connecticut Path has had the telephone pole replaced and wires reenergized. Road will reopen within the hour as soon as tree is removed. East Plain Street is now open. NSTAR crews have arrived on Woodridge Road with new telephone poles. Shawmut Road is being cleared of trees.

The list of NSTAR issues has been crosschecked with the Public Safety list.

Town of Wayland DPW crews are standing by to reopen roads as soon as the wires are removed and the area made safe. Wayland Police has established detours wherever possible. 9:30am

NSTAR crews are on scene at Old Connecticut Path at West Plain Street and actively repairing this problem. Much of Cochituate is out of power due to this location.

Concord Road is now open in both directions.

Bow Road is now open in both directions.

Roads that remain closed:

  • Stonebridge Road between Anthony Road and Highgate.
  • Pequot Road at #43
  • Happy Hollow Road from Route #27 to Rice Spring Road.
  • Old Connecticut Path at West Plain Street – NSTAR crews are on scene and actively repairing this problem. Much of Cochituate is out of power due to this location.
  • River Road at Water Row is closed by Sudbury Police
  • Rice Road between #209-227 is closed. No access through Rice Road
  • Dudley Road
  • Woodridge Road between #98 and 113 Closed – No Access to Black Oak.
  • White Road is closed at Route #20
  • Glezen Lane (west) closed at #90.

Detours have been established where possible.

NSTAR advises that it may still be several days before all power is restored.


August 29, 2011

3:15pm

Route #20 now open to two way traffic at Russell's.

NSTAR has a crew working on Old Connecticut Path and West Plain Street, however, this is a large job that could take some time to complete. Road remains closed with detours.

Detours improved for Concord Road.

Bow Road is being blocked at Old Sudbury Road to stop traffic that can't get onto Concord Road. Bow Road is blocked by trees and wires near the middle.

Many residents remain without power throughout town. All else remains the same.

2:15pm

Sherman Bridge Road now open.

2:00pm

NSTAR has arrived at West Plain Street and Old Connecticut Path and are in the process of setting a new telephone pole. It still will be some time before the road is open. The detour has been improved and the WPD signboard has been set up on the Framingham side of Route #126.

Detour has been improved on Stonebridge Road.

River Road has been closed at Water Row according to Sudbury Police.

NSTAR is working on locations on Woodridge Road.

Route-20 at White Road also blocked by downed and low-hanging wires from all utilities (Comcast, Fire Alarm, Verizon, and N-Star,) Noted this while travelling East on Rte-20 earlier today.

No other changes.

Residents are again advised to stay clear of any wires down. Treat all wires as if they are live electric wires.

 

12:20pm

  • The traffic signal at Route #20 and Route #126 is now working on generator power.
  • Sherman Bridge Road is now open at the Sudbury line.
  • Pelham Island Road is now open with two lanes of traffic.
  • Route # 20 at Russell's is down to one lane while crews remove a large tree from a house.

Main road closures are:

  • Old Connecticut Path at West Plain Street
  • Rice Road
  • Woodridge Road
  • Glezen Lane (east)
  • Concord Road at Plain Road

Police are shoring detours where possible to help motorists.

Residents are advised not to assume down power lines are not live. Treat every wire as a live wire and keep a safe distance. Do not cross yellow caution tape.

Below was received from NSTAR:

Restoration continues. NSTAR has a crew working in Wayland on the Natick line. Requires poles to be set and circuit restored. This would be Rte. 30 and Woodridge. Crews are restoring circuit in Sherborn, Framingham and road closures with wires down in Acton and Maynard. Sudbury has 25 specific locations for restoration of service. This could be lights out, wires down, ect.

MetroWest over 600 specific locations for restoration of service.

  • Rice Road – Road closed 1/4 mile from Old Conn. Path
  • Stonebridge Road – Road closed near Anthony Road – detour available.
  • Bow Road – Trees and Wires down – No through traffic
  • Glezen Lane – Closed at #90 Glezen Lane (east)
  • Other smaller roads with trees and wires down – Black Oak, Mayflower Path, Happy Hollow Road near Rice Spring, Dudley Road.

Many power outages throughout town. There can be no accurate estimate on when power will return as NSTAR is backed up and cannot give estimates. As a general rule the larger problems affecting major roadways will be fixed first. Smaller roads and individual houses can expect power to be out longer, possibly days.

The Wayland Building Inspector is inspecting three homes for structural damage due to fallen trees.

All traffic signals with the exception of Route #20 and Route #126 are operational. A police officer is directing traffic at this location. MassHighway electrical engineers are on scene.

Residents are asked to contact NSTAR with power related problems. Contact Joint Dispatch at 508-358-4721 for public safety issues and use 911 for emergencies.

If you are without power, and your cell phone needs re-charging, you are welcome to find a plug at the Wayland Public Safety Building.

August 28, 2011

As of 11:15 A.M.: Route #20 remains closed. Detour from Pinebrook to Old Connecticut path. Second tree on Route #20 at Russell's is being worked on by State Highway Crew. 12 Shawmut large tree down taking down wires. 7 Charles tree into home. Fuller Road transformer broken off pole. 151 Pelham Island Road tree into house minor structural damage. 113 Woodridge Road wires down Old Connecticut Path at West Plain Street tree down telephone pole snapped in half. Detour being set up. Coach Grill tree down.

As of 10:40 A.M. police, fire and DPW are responding to numerous trees down throughout town. Route #20 is totally closed in two locations due to trees down, one near the Sunoco Station and also at Russell's Garden Center. There are widespread power outages throughout town and the Public Safety Building is on generator power. Specific areas affected: Stonebridge Road Closed between Highgate and Anthony. Old Tavern Road tree on fire. Alden Road tree and wires down Castlegate three trees in roadway. Lakeshore Drive electric service ripped from house. 51 Edgewood tree across road. Tree on house 48 Country Corners State DOT and NSTAR notified of Route #20 problems One detour from Pinebrook Road to Old Connecticut path has been established. Residents urged not to contact Dispatch for power outages. Contact NSTAR.

Tree down on Route 20, causing a second, larger outage.

As of 10:00 A.M there was a large branch down on Concord Road in the vicinity of the library, removed within 10 minutes by DPW. A tree has fallen blocking Ridgefield Road at Fairfield Road. DPW responding. There is one small localized power outage in the vicinity of 53 Concord Road. NSTAR has been notified. All roads remain open, traffic remains extremely light.

The EOC is now open and staffed. Currently there are no problems to report, no power outages or road closures. I will try to provide updates as the day progresses, it appears the worst of the storm will be felt in Wayland during the afternoon. Contact can be made through Dispatch at 508-358-4721.

Roads are empty, as most people seem to be taking the advise to remain home during the storm.
