Help with grieving process for Wayland High grads and parents

Wayland Town Crier 8/14/11: Help with grieving process for Wayland High grads and parents. Losing a friend and classmate is hard to cope with under any circumstances, and the circumstances of Lauren Astley’s death teamed with the fact that we are imminently headed in different directions leaves us all with questions, concerns and worries. Will my new friends “get it”? Will it change me? Will I grieve? For how long?

Jeff’s Place, a peer-based support group program for grieving children and teens in Wayland and surrounding communities, invites all 2011 graduating seniors from Wayland High School, as well as their parents and other adult community members interested in learning how to support grieving children and teens, to attend a supportive, nondenominational open meeting at Temple Shir Tikva, 141 Boston Post Road, Wayland, on Thursday, August 18 at 7pm. Snacks will be provided.

There will be two simultaneous group meetings for the graduating seniors and adults. For the graduating seniors, the purpose of the meeting is to offer a safe place to share feelings, express concerns or worries, and learn about what one may expect in terms of potential grief reactions. This meeting is restricted to 2011 graduates. Coping strategies will be discussed that may be helpful while away at colleges and universities.

This program is not geared only towards Lauren or Nate’s friends, but to anyone who has been touched by Lauren’s death in Wayland High School’s Class of 2011.

The adult meeting will focus on educating parents and caregivers on how to support their grieving kids and potential grief reaction triggers.

Jeff’s Place is a nondenominational, nonprofit organization. We gratefully acknowledge Temple Shir Tikva for donating the space for all of our programs throughout the year. Jeff’s Place is available to provide other special meetings regarding issues of grief and loss as it relates to children, teens and families upon request.
