Wayland Town Crier 8/12/11: The 'Woodies' find a home at Mel's in Wayland. Almost every Saturday morning, a group of “seasoned” men can be found sitting around a table at Mel’s Restaurant in Wayland talking about love affairs that have lasted for decades. Their wives know; some of them even wait nearby. Their children know. And their grandchildren know. Outside in the parking lot sit the objects of their affections – a 1948 Chrysler Town & Country convertible; a 1951 Packard convertible; a 1953 Buick; and a 1973 Jaguar. Meet the “Woodies.” The name of the group originally comes from cars made with wooden sides, explains Al Dann of Wayland. But now members own all varieties of vintage automobiles, which they drive and show all over the country. Most of them have more than one such car, typically worth at least six figures each.
