News and Updates from the Council on Aging, July 29, 2011

Please note that the office hours of the town building will be changing effective July 1,, 2011. We will be making programming changes to comply with the new hours. Summer movies, however, will continue to be held twice monthly. On those Fridays only, the Council on Aging will close at 2:30 p.m. Otherwise the office will close with the Town Building at 12:30 p.m. Please check our calendar and newsletter for further details.

Needed: BEADS! BEADS! BEADS! The Children's Holiday Shoppe Committee continues to need donations of beads (glass, stone, wooden). Your donations will be used to create lovely jewelry with the guidance of Wayland jeweler Norma Radoff. Workshops will be offered this fall to participants who wish to learn jewelry making techniques while creating pieces to be sold at the 24th Children's Holiday Shoppe in December.
 
TWO DOLLAR COOL OFF WEDNESDAYS in August.  Join us for a $2.00 luncheon on Wednesdays in August at Noon. Enjoy the air conditioning and a welcomed mid-day hiatus from your activities. Reservations required. Menu includes dessert and beverage: Aug. 3 (Sandwich Bar); Aug. 10 (Pizza Buffet), Aug. 17 (Sandwich Bar); August 24 (Quiche/Salad); Aug. 31 (Sandwich Buffet).
 
TANGLEWOOD OVERNIGHT, August 28 – 29. Lorin Maazel conducts Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 plus the Tanglewood Festival Chorus performs at
Tanglewood. Reserved seats inside The Shed for the Sunday evening Boston Symphony Orchestra concert. Overnight at the Williams Inn.
 
SUMMER SCHEDULE for BETTER BALANCE – Now on Wednesdays, 9:30 a.m to 10:30 a.m., three-week session ($19/session). New class session starts
August 3.
 
GENTLE CHAIR YOGA.  Free “Try It” Wed., Sept 14, 1pm. 4 week session starts: Sept. 28. Pre-register for 4 week session ($32); Course Instructor: Leslie Worris, The Wellness Alliance; A can-do class for beginners, those with injuries, or anyone living with special challenges, such as limited mobility or recent surgery. For students who find it difficult to transition to and from the floor, we will explore a great variety of Yoga poses, both sitting and standing with a chair assist. Increase flexibility and strength, improve balance, endurance, mobility, circulation and decrease stress. Chair Yoga encourages proper breathing and better posture. Meditation, breath work and relaxation techniques included.
 
TAI CHI FOR STRESS REDUCTION, Wednesdays, 10:30-11:30am, Certified Instructor: Robin Natanel.  5 sessions in August $25 (or $8.00/class if not pre-registered.).  Free “Try It Class” for first time students.  Learn to use the Tai Chi form to increase your physical balance and "sense" of balance. Tai Chi allows you to physically, mentally and emotionally feel YOUR flow aligning with the flow of nature. The class begins with music and meditation, some Qi Qong breathing techniques, temple exercises for flexible joints and strength, then the Tai Chi form itself. Class adapts to the participant’s individual needs. Tai Chi can lower blood pressure, improve balance and reduce pain. * Tai Chi is open to non-seniors*
 
COA VAN: Call the COA office or refer to the calendar in the COA newsletter to see the numerous trips for Wayland residents to Market Basket in Ashland, “Around Town” errands, even the band concerts in Natick! Van will pick residents up at their homes.
 
COMING THIS FALL:
  • The 2nd Wednesday BROWN BAG SEMINAR, Wednesdays: Sept. 14, Oct. 12, Nov. 9 at Noon. This is a dynamic new series with fascinating speakers starting September 14 at Noon ($15 for the 3 month series includes great speakers, appetizers, beverage and dessert. Just bring your sandwich). This program is patterned after the Lifelong Learning Courses at area universities. Kick-off speaker: Chief Meteorologist for Fox News: Kevin Lemanowicz. Speakers will address the group and then participants will enjoy a relaxed, roundtable conversation with the speaker. Pre-register for this interesting new series.
  • SHAKESPEARE COURSE starting in October with Stephen Collins.
  • WAYLAND’S IRON CHEF II  returns to Sandy Burr Country Club on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2011, at 4-7pm.  SAVE THE DATE for this amazing timed grilling competition! Also enjoy wine bottle ring toss, a professionaly judged timed cake decorating contest and so much more! Cheer on your favorite teams representing many different organizations. This is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Wayland Council On Aging, Inc. For info about the event, or to purchase tickets ($50), contact the Council on Aging at 508 358 2990.
