Wayland parents share pain, solutions

Wayland Town Crier 7/13/11: Wayland parents share pain, solutions. Children are remarkably resilient in dealing with tragedy, a psychologist told hundreds of parents at a forum last nightto discuss how to help their children cope with Lauren Astley's murder. Mark Kline, a psychologist at The Human Relations Service, explained how he's discussed Astley death with his own children, fielded questions from the audience at Wayland Middle School and offered parents a chance to voice their own concerns. "I want to reassure you a little bit," Kline said. "My experience has been that kids are much more resilient when it comes to coping with something like this than we often give them credit for. "If we respect that, but give them a chance to express what they're feeling and not subject them to undue interrogation or probing if it seems they want to be quiet about it, 99 percent of our kids are going to feel better over time."
