Wayland Students Help Distribute $8,700 in Grants to Local Organizations

Wayland Patch 6/7/11: Wayland Students Help Distribute $8,700 in Grants to Local Organizations. Three Wayland youth have discovered firsthand that it is better to give than to receive. Wayland residents Tom Sommers, a junior at Belmont Hill School in Belmont, Mass.; Claire Bailey, a junior at Wayland High School; and Laura Vancil, also a WHS junior are all members the Youth Action Council part of Foundation for MetroWest’s Youth in Philanthropy program. Sommers, Bailey and Vancil, along with 13 of their peers from around MetroWest, have spent the past several months looking at grant applications, talking with and visiting the applicants, fundraising and ultimately awarding $8,700 to three area organizations. The Decibels Foundation received $3,600, the Boys & Girls Club of Assabet Valley received $2,600, and Camp Starfish received $2,500 to fund a scholarship for a camper.
