News and Events from the Wayland Library, April 1, 2011

HOLIDAY HOURS
We will be closed for Patriots’ Day on Monday, April 18, and also on Easter Sunday, April 24.

BETSY MOYER PHOTOGRAPHY
Longtime Wayland resident Betsy Moyer offers a potpourri of new photographic images in the library foyer during April. Betsy began serious photography in 1995 on an RV trip with her husband through Arizona and Utah, where, despite the glory of the red-rocked landscapes, the wildflowers on the ground were what captured her imagination. In the fall of that year she helped establish Sudbury Valley Nature Photographers, a non-competitive photo club that still meets on the second Thursday evening of every month at Traditions of Wayland.

WAYNE HALL PHOTOGRAPHY
Sudbury photographer Wayne Arthur Hall exhibits a series of images in the Raytheon Room during April that showcase the beauty and variety of nature that can be observed by simply looking down at the ground or into the water. Ranging from the intricate detail of tiny wildflowers to abstract images of autumn foliage reflected in Wyman’s Meadow at Walden Pond, his work emphasizes strong colors and the myriad of textures and patterns to be found “underfoot” in the outdoors in all four seasons of the year.

NEEDLEWORK GROUP
The next meeting of our new needlework group will be on Thursday, April 14, at 10:00 a.m. in the Raytheon Room. It’s is a group for quilters, decorative sewers, and knitters to socialize, work on hand projects (no machines), share ideas, and explore resources.

SHAKESPEARE WITH HELEN WHALL
If it’s spring, it must be time for Professor Helen Whall to return to the Wayland Library for our annual Shakespeare festival. This year Dr. Whall has chosen the theme “Shakespeare on the Screen.” We’ll learn how and why movie makers were quickly drawn to adapting Shakespeare to the silver screen. We’ll take a look at adaptations of several plays through the years, from the silent screen to the present day. Whall will introduce the theme at our first session in the Raytheon Room on Tuesday, April 26. The other two sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays, May 10, and May 24. In this series, we will be taking a particular look at two plays: Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet
