WBSA UMPIRE Training and Mentorship Program

The WBSA is proud to announce our new UMPIRE Training and Mentorship Program developed by Ed Samp and Asa Foster. New umpires will be provided classroom and on field instructions by a qualified umpire trainer. Apprentice umpires will be trained by Senior umpires during games while earning some extra money. Here are some relevant details:

  • Umpires must be in eighth grade or above.
  • The umpire program will support our Minors and Majors baseball Leagues.
  • Minors players are from grades 3 and 4.
  • Majors players are from grades 5 and 6 (and some grade 7, depending upon age).
  • Games are played at 6PM Tue, Wed, Thu, and Fri on Wayland fields.
  • Rescheduled games (for rain-outs) can happen at any time. Umpires will need to be at the fields at 5:45 PM.
  • An umpire with experience will be designated as a Senior Umpire.
  • An umpire with no experience will be designated as an Apprentice Umpire.
  • Minors games will have one umpire (a Senior Umpire).
  • Majors games will have two umpires (a Senior Umpire and an Apprentice Umpire).
  • The Apprentice umpire will be the bases umpire and then switch to behind the plate for innings 5 and 6.
  • There will be one mandatory ninety-minute training session with either Asa Foster and/or Ed Samp.
  • Equipment will be issued upon successful completion of training.
