Wayland’s Newest Call Firefighter Graduates from Firefighting Academy

Wayland Patch 3/8/11: Wayland’s Newest Call Firefighter Graduates from Firefighting Academ. For Philip Howell, firefighting is just part of his family history. His father, Warren Howell, is a retired fire marshal of Rockaway Township, New Jersey, and his wife’s father, Capt. Lewis LeBlanc, is a retired Wayland firefighter. It isn’t terribly surprising that Howell, himself, has a passion for the craft. On March 2, Howell graduated from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy in Stow after completing 180 hours of weeknight and weekend training. Howell is now the newest of Wayland’s eight call firefighters. Wayland’s call firefighters serve as on-call firefighters should the full-time firefighters of the department need back-up during a major structure fire. Wayland Fire Chief Robert Loomer said the town budget can support 10 of these positions so there are currently two vacancies.
