Wayland/Framingham receive 2-to-1 matching grant from MA DCR for invasive weed management in North Pond of Lake Cochituate

Wayland Surface Water Quality Committee's successful joint proposal with Framingham to the DCR for invasive weed control in North Pond was announced today at a ceremony at the State House.   Lin Bradford and Mike Lowery and state representative Tom Conroy attended for Wayland where new DCR commissioner Ed Lambert greeted partners and state senators and representatives.

Wayland and Framingham each will contribute $4000 which will be matched by $16,000 from the DCR partnership program.  2011 will be the third year of our successful program to manage invasive Eurasian Water Milfoil in North Pond using a mix of techniques including diver hand pulling, barrier netting, and herbicide treatment where necessary.

Our neighbors in Natick were also successful and will again use diver hand pulling to remove milfoil from the DCR beach and boat launch in Middle Pond near the entrance to North Pond.  This will lessen the incoming milfoil fragments and reduce re-infestation in North Pond.

2011 should also see another inter-town/state cooperative program to enable abutters to pay divers to remove milfoil from their shorefront through a generic permitting program under the Lake Cochituate Watershed Council.   The program is the result of joint work among DCR, the Cochituate State Park Advisory Board, the Wayland, Framingham, and Natick Conservation Commissions, the Lake Cochituate Watershed Council, and Wayland Surface Water Quality Committee.
